Prince Harry to attend launch of GREAT campaign event in Rio

He is probably the world’s most eligible bachelor and now Prince Harry is set to set Brazil alight when he arrives on an official visit in March.

The Prince of Wales’s second son will attend the launch of the GREAT campaign event in Rio which celebrates the connections between Brazil and the UK.

It is described as an opportunity for Brazilian and British investors, politians, cultural leaders and celebrities to strengthen connections and build new ones.

Harry, the third in line to the British throne, will arrive in Brazil on 09 March after touring Belize, the Bahamas and Jamaica as part of celebrations for his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, officials said.

The 27 year old’s visit is also designed to ‘enhance the partnership between the United Kingdom and Brazil’ said a spokesman for the Prince. He added that Harry also hoped to use the visit to further the interests of the charitable foundation he has set up with his brother, Prince William, which focuses on young people, conservation and the armed forces. He is expected to stay on for a private holiday for a few days after his official duties have been completed.

UK Foreign Secretary William Hague is just finishing a visit to Brazil during which he held two days of talks with leaders and politians, announced the Prince’s visit.

Speaking alongside Sergio Cabral, Governor of Rio de Janeiro, Hague said;

‘Brazil and the UK have much in common, with a shared history and close cultural bonds. We are committed to strengthening our political, cultural and economic ties, and it is with this in mind that I am visiting Brazil, my first South American trip as Foreign Secretary.

‘I am now pleased to announce that His Royal Highness Prince Harry will also soon be here, and will attend the Great Campaign launch event in March. We hope, through this renewed and continued engagement with Brazil, to show that we in the UK are open for business with the rest of the world and determined to build our relationships,’ he added.

Hague said that there is vast scope for greater co-operation between the two countries, particularly on immense global issues like climate change and international development.

‘We are not short of things to sell to Brazil,’ he added, outlining opportunities for British companies ranging from oil and gas, to infrastructure, management and development, pharmaceuticals and aerospace.

In a keynote speech Hague said that improved relations with Brazil were part of new chapter.

‘In the late 20th century Britain looked away. Four of our Latin American embassies were shut, diplomats were withdrawn and our links faltered just as your continent began its extraordinary rise,’ he said.

‘I think that British relations with Latin America, including Brazil, have been neglected over the last decade and possibly more. I don’t mince words about that. But we are energetically setting about putting that right. It is true that economically our relations represent quite a small percentage of our trade. But British companies are already the fourth largest investor in Brazil and the export figures are improving dramatically,’ he added.
