On Saturday Corazon Aquino died of cancer at 76 and today (Wednesday August 5) is a national day of mourning for her. When Marcos was on his way out in 1983, her husband Benigno "Nimoy" Aquino returned from exile in the US to oppose Marcos in the first election for over ten years. He was assassinated at the airport when he got off the plane. The airport now bears his name.

His wife, Cory, who had previously been a well educated housewife picked up his banner, ran and won the presidency three years later.

She is a genuine national hero and the coverage of her funeral has been on TV all day here.
