Question Islands of Tahiti: The French Polynesia!

Gentlemen -

We're curious about the French Polynesia/islands South Pacific. What is the situation there? We all realize that conventional wisdom says 'touristy' or 'rich and famous' or 'for my honeymoon'. I would like to read feedback and thoughts on how some of us view this area of the world.

Cool Re: Tahiti - The French Polynesia

I you lived there, would you want to leave?

Actually, the French screwed things up there a long time ago, and being a French Protectorate, the uppity class there live on nothing but the best that our good french fry and brie greezing across the pond counterparts can muster over. Way too expensive, and a tad overrated in my opinion.

If you want South Pacific action without the drama, here's a short list (omitting of course the PI and Thailand):

1) Fiji
2) Western Samoa (not to be confused with American Samoa)
3) New Zealand (Oh yeah baby...besides having the best Ice Cream that I've ever tasted...the woman are...well...think Rachel Hunter in the old Keystone Beer commercial)

Of course, any of the above would be dependent on what your taste in women is/was/will be.

Question Re: Tahiti - The French Polynesia

Thanks El Cap.

Anyone else feel like adding their opinions about the South Pacific and the islands there? Might there be 'other reasons' I am not aware of that we don't go there other than 'overrated expensive and far away'? My logic says there has got to be out of the way islands around Tahiti that get few tourists. For heavens sakes, look at that pic! If that ain't enough to light a fire under you, what is? Johnny Cay in San Andres doesn't even come close to that photograph. I ask you to please feel free to ask questions, make comments and offer feedback as no question is a dumb question.

Lightbulb Re: Tahiti - The French Polynesia

Not a problem Ray,

I'm really quite surprised by the lack of interest in anything mcuh removed from Colombia. It's actually quite interesting as to why the lion's share of the guys think that it's the cats whiskers.

What would be the reason that you gentlemen (and I use that term REAL loosely) wouldn't consider anything but Colombia, and let's say Peru as an alternative?

Default Re: Tahiti - The French Polynesia

Had made some tentative plans to sail to the French Polynesian islands and a few of the other islands. Fellow sailors, who had been there, say it is indeed paradise…with a catch. The smaller islands still hold promise and the supply boat still comes once a month…if that. Rule of Thumb is if you didn’t bring it with you, you will NOT find it on the smaller islands. That part sounds good to me. ElC is correct that the French did indeed screw up the area but that is only because they got there before the U.S..

A current problem is the land area is shrinking…no that is not quite correct. The land is still there, just not suitable for some things. We are entering into another 150 year epoch, where things and climates change around a bit. Back around the 1400’s those silly Vikings found a land mass they obviously named incorrectly…Greenland. The land WAS indeed green at the time so they can be forgiven their optimism . They raised crops and sheep for about 70 years, then the climate changed….’Global Cooling’ anyone. Gone were the crops, the sheep and the Vikings, who decided to head South being the pansies asses they were. What has this to do with French Polynesia?

With Greenland beginning to thaw out at bit, [Ray, in a few years you should be able to get a nice condo there ], the ice is melting and raising the water level in the oceans. This means that some of the ‘prime land’ in French Polynesia and other islands are how shall we say…..’underwater’. Even some of the freshwater springs inland are becoming polluted with saltwater.

Hi RAY,
I've been there a while ago when I was living in France and it's beautifull but too tight for me...As you all know this french island is bounded by french and life there is cheaper than in the metropole but still compared to DR or CUBA or even COLOMBIA.
Womens there are in the french style meaning by that they love to be seduced and sometimes it can take a while to get some intimate action like in caraibe
If you're going thwere to visit, people are really warm and will welcome you well; for a wife I would say it's more than sure you will have a strongly good wife material, but be ready to work.
No agencies there because they don't need to leave, and if they want to, they just take the plane and go in france or elsewhere; they have the french nationality overthere.
Hope my insight was helpfull; if you have more questions feel free to ask
