Congrats on the 6 month anniversary. Age can be an issue for many folks, but, IMO, not everyone! The age difference between me and my wife is nothing compared to you (only 13 years), but I still have hear about it. The reality is that a woman of a particular age (whether it's 18 or 25) in another country is not necessarily the same as a gringa of the same age. Not saying women in Asia or Colombia or wherever are ALL more mature than gringas....anyone whose been to another country will know that's a lie.....but I would have to say that age difference seems to be more common, more acceptable, and more likely to work in other cultures. Congrats and continued happiness.

GrizGator,

Cingrats to you too. You are one of the few who has made it work in the US. You obviously chose the right woman to pull that off. Indeed 13 years is a big age difference in the US.

I know if I brought Mitch to the US guys would hit on her all the time and tell her she could do better. Fellow Filipinas would tell her that now that she's in the US they can suggest ways to play me. Whereas here, people tell her she's lucky,

You cant fool me there is no sanity clause is an old Marx Brothers line from Chico in Day at the Races. cierto?

Forty year old women who have never married in Colombia and who are good lookers, have had problems with men or they are controlling in thei own ways...or are too high maintenance...or have really terrific careers...or have some disorders base don their pasts. Just my observations.

But...an attractive 40 year olf or more colombiana who hasnt had a lover in some time, ay yi yi!!!!!!

DL,

Sorry to hear about your recent breakup. You might want to "lower your standards" somewhat and be like many of the expat degenerates here and try a Latina a little younger.

Jim,
Congrats to your relationship with Mitch. May there be many more six month anniversaries for you.

Me too Sail. You forgot to mention way too casually dressed (both men & women). There are a few advantages though that I might mention later in another post that might be noteworthy or then again I might just be trying to up my post count now that Cuba blew past me.

Good point Tint, the dress of the average American is just this side of mug shot. I drove across the country last week and once you leave Dade county, it looks like the entire place is one big WalMart. Polyester, cell phones and cigarettes. (and shockingly few teeth!) The average Latin woman prides herself in how she looks and it shows. In Alabama? Who knew that Mumuus were still in fashion anywhere but the South Pacific. Bloody Mary? Bloody hell!

At this point, i would rather die in SA then ever return to the Walmart culture with 300 pound women trawling through the aisles in golf carts because theyre too fat and lazy to walk!

There are plump even heavy women in Bogota, but I dont think Ive ever seen a woman who was dangerously, morbidly obese. There are no golf carts in the Carrefours or Exitos!!!!!

It is indeed amazing how entitled the American woman feels. Imagine riding around the walmart with your electric cart full of coke and candybars. And imagine being a business that has to spend quite a bit of money to provide that service. I have nearly been run over by two ton Tillie reaching for the Kit Kats. Of course I have been next in line at a Colombian store and had a bulldozing Latina cut right in front without even a glance and start in on her tail of woe. And they seem genuninely surprised when they are called on it.
But baby, I call. Just like at the 5 items or less. Or the no cell phone zone. Or at the bikini clip at the beauty school. You just have to stand up for your rights!

Jim,

Congrats and thanks for the post. Sounds like what retirement is all about! I plan on retiring abroad myself and appreciate insights on any and all aspects of life. Stay well.

sws,

Visit at least three possible retirement destinations and get to know each of them before you decide. When I chose the Philippines in the fall of 2007 (after two trips to Colombia and two to the Phils in four months), I did it on a provisional basic. It's been a wise choice so far.

Relating this back to Sailover's comment about butting in line, SAME HERE. In traffic and in stores, a few people believe that they shouldn't have to wait in line. I also call them on it but this is rare. And businesses absolutely treat you like you need them more them. Today at the grocery it was really crowded. Lines are made slower because many sari-sari store owners buy their stock at grocery stores and have a shopping cart crammed with stuff for their store. When I got in line there were two lines and they promptly closed one and we waited in line for 25 minutes.

So I have learned to relax mostly and appreciate that I'm retired and I really don't have anything better to do.

I need to adopt Jim's whatever attitude. It still drives me CRAZY when ****z like that happens. I most often just walk out, leaving whatever I wanted to buy. Having them make me wait to SPEND in THEIR business money pushes me ever closer to the edge.
Good thing I got such good contrlllll
