Question Tony Bourdain Loves Bali

Guys,

Tony really digs Bali.... he says he might settle down there. And BTW great show tonight too. Some friends I know live in Singapore offered some open arms invite but that flight is a killer!

My question is what is this area of the world like in terms of culture, food, people, etc?

Thanks

If you have a chance to visit Singapore----take it! It is one of the most interesting international cities, states, and nations---- all on a relatively small island.

It's got the classic British colonial state -thing going for it, as well as the primary Malay and Chinese cultures. It is first world, exotic, prosperous, orderly, and respectful place to travel. The people are polite, reserved, and the government runs regular billboard and TV campaigns to remind the citizens of basic courtesies to one another and to tourist guests, the elderly, etc. They have ushers in some of the movie theaters to remind people not to talk during the show, and spitting and depositing chewing gum on the street or subway is an infraction.

It's a nice departure from the permissive culture of California, so I really enjoyed it! On the other hand, it can be sterile and fake. The popular beach is man-made, with artificial islands covering oil derricks and booms. It is spotless in many places and the behavior of the people is perfect. They are cell phone and text crazy! They love technology and have the newest stuff first. You can find anything you could possibly want there---it is truly one of the world's crossroads!

It is expensive---along the lines of Hong Kong. There is a fantastic Botanical gardens and zoo which is also open at night! There are many British and American expats and many bars and first-class restaurants. There is a large Indian influence as well, and the choices for dining are incredible.

Singapore is a very interesting place, and one of my favorite stops in Asia! Five days should do it for most people because it is a pretty commercial place with a high standard of living, and not much room to roam.

Regards,
Sal

Did we all see the Bourdain show on Colombia, or has this been discussed? Great show focusing on Medellin. [Tony and I both worked at Les Halles and he wrote the intro to my book, the best writing in the book -)]

Singapore is supposed to be a great place to visit plus it’s one of the ten countries which Philippines can visit without a visa. Jessa is applying for her visa Friday. We’ve just finished gathering the endless documentation required.

Ray, IT IS NOT A LONG TRIP. If you take that attitude you’ll never get out of America and you’re missing a lot. I’ve made the trip eleven times in less than three years and it’s a small sacrifice to make for what awaits you. Remember, about 90% of US citizens never go abroad because of the inconvenience. I sleep most of the trip.

I have two friends from hash who moved to Bali. I think many tropical pacific islands (including the Philippines) have a commonality between them.
