Anyone have problems with the altittude in Bogota..I always get sick first few day...headaches and so on.... The weather also is the pits......cold damp and deary...thank God for the women cause that city leaves alot to be desired.
I don't have any trouble with the altitude. Unless I try anything strenous. Like walking or getting out of bed.
I have heard lately though it has been sunny and warmer than usual. Be sure you wear a hat. That high alpine sun is very strong and will burn you quickly.
I will let you know this week. I went over Christmas and the first day I had a headache and was vomitting in the morning. The headache took a little more than a day to go away. I go again tomorrow so hopefully it was just a fluke.
Dont eat a lot of heavy food day or so prior ,and definetely eat super light on the flight. Being in shape helps alot to take in the little oxygen they got up there in bogota.
My big mistake last time was arriving late one night than working out hard the first morning. Apparently that can be dangerous.. People have been known to have heatattacks when arriving in high altitudes and working out the first few days.
I say take it easy dont over do it the first day or 2.
I will be there this week also, so I am already thinking about it cause i have a booked schedule the first day. Not looking forward to that part..

MLC I swear it sounds like you went and got yourself Knocked up...
Spent many years as an EMT in Colorado, and toted more flatlanders off Pikes Peak than I care to recall, all good advise above, yeah you should allow your body at least a few days to a week to become a little Acclimated, before doing much activity, of coarse many variables here, like your age, physical condition, health history and so on. Bogota is about 8500', significant if you live at or close to sea level, but any more than some shortness of breath and dizziness, may be you should talk to your Doc. Heart attacks can also display some of the same symtoms. Take care

crazy things happen at high altitudes on lonely back streets when you're in a foreign county all by yourself with a little too much booze.... or you know... a regular Friday night here in Hollywood.
So the only reference I have for altitude is Beaver Creek in Colorado. Went there one long weekend for skiing and was uncomfortable. I had trouble sleeping, headaches, generally not the most enjoyable time. I didn't have too much trouble with food or exertion, but I also didn't push myself. The bigger problem was sleeping and dehydration.
Beaver Creek is only 7400ft ,and Bogota is 8500ft and I'm 14 years older, 36 vs 50. Now I'm wondering if this is a good idea.
