Chew on some coca leaves. I heard it works. I always get plain tired in bogota for a couple of days.. Than again I am alwasy really busy these so maybe its partly that.
Hi. I went there for a week in February 2009. The air takes getting use to (and having asthma didn't help matters. Fortunately, I had my medication with me). During the day, I thought the weather was pleasant. But at night, IT WAS BRICK (very cold)!!!!! Later.
The cool, drizzly night air chills right to the bone. It feels like Cape Cod in November. But at least the air is very contaminated which holds some of the daytime heat in.
I lived in Bogota for 3.5 years (2001 to mid 2004). I was slightly overweight, had mild high blood pressure but exercised several times a week. Like most people, I went through the one to two week altitude adjustment phase.
Most of the expats that I knew did not seem to have any prolong problems with the altitude. In my case, my blood pressure increased and even with close medical supervision and increased meds, it was out of control for about one year.
It appears that high altitude effect everyone differently. Some of the things that might come into play are age, weight, physical condition, life style, as well as cardiovascular/ respiratory problems.
My suggestion is not to assume all is ok. Instead, hook up with a doctor (basic care is cheap) and monitor your health for a few months.
Hi Party People. My apologies for the long delay (I know...3 months- process of moving and brief illness). I stayed three weeks in Colombia in August. As I previously mentioned, my first week in Cali was a drag (normally, I would NEVER say such a thing). Anyway, on Tuesday, Aug. 22, I went to the bus terminal in Cali to take the bus to Pereira. ..........Pereira also has quite a few shopping malls. I'll tell you about the ladies that I met. Later.
Scourge,
Great to see you back here! However, I am still waiting to hear about some of the details about Pereira and your trip to La Zona Cafetera. I think that was back in 2007, but better extremely late than never. Also, sounds like you might be a regular traveler to Colombia. Cough up some details and a trip report!
A low dose asprin can slightly thin ones blood and assist in becoming acclimated to Bogota. Also stay away from greasy food for a few days. It is also noted that some people seem to better tolerate altitude.
