Wiring money gets there almost immediately. I have done it. Last $300 (my mistake!) cost me $40 though. Bye Bye $300....

Cool

Jim,

You said:

"About ten months ago when I began to e-mail my novia, I sent her my photo by snail mail. She told me I was detallisto."

Jim, she called you "detallista" not "detallisto."

"I agree it is a hugely important concept."

Jim, you're right. By the way, the "detallista" concept is a two-way street in Latin America. Gringos, the women will do little "detallista" things for you. You better notice these little things, and you better "overreact" in a positive way. If a Latina doesn't do little "detallista" things, it's a bad sign.

"Another conotation of it is meticulous or detail oriented (detalle = detail). Anyone who brushes her teeth eight times a day or has a weekly manicure and pedicure is detallista."

Jim, I can't remember ever hearing "detallista" used in this way, but it's certainly possible. The more common usage is the context Bill & I mentioned.

"By the way, now that she knows me, I don't hear the word detallisto and my name in the same sentence."

Welcome to the club! Every Latina does that with me, too.

"My novia's suitcase was ransacked while in the custody of Avianca so I wouldn't send anything with them."

ALWAYS GET YOUR SUITCASES WRAPPED AT THE PLASTIC STATIONS IN THE MIAMI AIRPORT!!!

FedEX, 3 business days, never had a problem, and you can track it all the way.

$25 to $45 to most cities in Colombia, also
I think the packages are secure and unopened.

Archives, Archives, Archives
Man this is an old one!!!

[The Case of the missing webcam]
I didn't want to bring something like this up In a new thread, I figured it would have been a subject beat like a dead horse by now, but I didn't even check.

I shipped a package to a friend in Cartagena, inside were some lady things and one electronic item (a WEBCAM). I didn't think about it at the time but a headset would have been good also. There is more to this story but I want to focus on the mail system. Fedex and DHL have gone up since this thread was originally posted. I sent my package through regular priority mail from California. I was told it would reach it's destination in 10 business days. This didn't happen. After a month and a half the package was returned to me. The name and address had a big black X drawn through it. There was a customs label on it (in Spanish), and the package had been opened then retaped. I opened it and all the items had been tampered with but the only thing missing was the webcam, they were kind enough to leave the scraps from the webcam container.

I spoke to friend in town who had shipped a pair of shoes to a lady in Barranquilla but he used Fedex and it was delivered. He also told me there was a laundry list of things you cannot ship to Colombia

Has anyone had this type of issue since this ancient thread was scribed on Papyri? jajajaja

Airto, the archives are a good thing, a very good thing. If you do an advanced search located at the top of the page using DSL, UPS etc as keywords, lots more will pop up.

Never forget the cheapest way to get something from here to there and vice versa...a courrier. I once courriered a 19" TV to Bogota! I've brought a debit card for a friends GF, legal papers for a friend's marriage and brought stuff back for friends too.

When I run out of coffee, I'll see who has room to bring me back a bunch of Juan Valdez or Oma Export.

Just don't bring back too many cigarettes for someone or it will get you detained. Believe me, I know

I saw bats when I blow the dust of this one

I was just being funny about how old this thread is, I had to think about what I was doing at that time. I had full head of hair then.

I did an advanced search for UPS, DHL, and Fedex, nothing came up under DHL or UPS but this thread was number 1 for Fedex. The point I was trying to get across was that I had something stolen using the regular mail system (inexpensive to ship) and that the DHL and FEDEX costs was more expensive than all the items I shipped. I will not use regular mail again unless I send a letter.
Is anyone shipping gifts or needed items to a friend or novia in Colombia circa 2008 time frame and if so what courier do you use? and what are the costs?

Interesting, side note, I sent some toys to the son of a gal I dated in colombia 3 years ago for christmas. Apparently you cannot have toys with guns on them even if they are like gobots, they are against the law.. oooopppsss, well needless to say they made it thru and he had a bad ass toy!

I think it is actually easier to get a real gun than a toy with a gun on it in cali!

Let me chime in here. This might have been mentioned before but, there is an outfit in Miami that will ship anything you want to Bogota. Bogota only! It is very cheap (pennies on the dollar). The catch is you must ship your box to Miami first. Call them and they can explain the details. It helps if you speak Spanish. No one in the Miami office speaks English well.
I have used this service with zero problems.

I don't think they ship anywhere else than Bogota. Although you might want to contact them, since it has been a few years since I used the service. They might have expanded.

It was really cheap. About 8 dollars as opposed to Fed Ex which is something like 60 dollars (or something like that).
