guys thanks for the input. The rates have changed since STM posted the $25 to $45(Fedex) for most Colombian cities. I got a rate quote from Fedex and their international Economy rate which is about 7 days is over $200 and I'm talking about just 10 pounds. Better off wiring the money.
jajaja

Talk about ironic, but looking at sending a laptop to Barranquilla. Needless to say, it will have to be with DHL or Fedex. Can anyone recommend other options? Thanks loads.
I just sent some documents to Colombia today. What would cost me a few dollars to send insured through the US Postal Service cost me $69 with FedEx. There was no cheaper way.
I know that there are some shipping companies in some cities that will ship items to Colombia reasonably. My wife's sister used one in N.J. to ship a TV and other items to Medellin, delivered to the door. I think the same company is in Orlando. The goods go by boat. It's not fast, maybe taking up to a month, but it's a reasonable price. Made it worthwhile to buy the TV in the U.S. and ship it there. Does anyone on the board know of other such shipping companies?
Does anyone on the board have experience with renting a container on a ship and sending household items? Please, if anyone has any info to offer, speak up. There are a lot of us needing this service.

Correct me if I am wrong but, I don't think you can do that. They will open the package when she (or whoever you are sending it too) arrives to pay. After they open the box and discover it is a laptop, then they will charge her (not you) a tremedous duty (or tax). It would be cheaper to buy it in Colombia.

Hey Eman. I'm afraid you may be right! I will let you know what I find. Some gift: receive it and pay your country's import tax big time!
I ship some products for sale down there occasionally. It seems to be very expensive through the postal service over 100 dollars for 2 medium boxes. And a postcard from bogota to u.s. was crazy ....like 14,000 pesos i think. After the packages arrived in Cartagena the postal service there held them and I made it back to Colombia before the packages got there,,,6 weeks late,,,haha,,,then another 30 dollars a box to get them to release the boxes..wow...there has to be another way,,,maybe fill my siutcase wiith the products next time,,,
