I will be in Barranquilla for a week in November. Things are getting serious with my novia there, and she has strongly invited me to stay at the family apartment in Soledad instead of staying in the North at Majestic or Versalles like usual. I can't do it! Soledad and the noise/trafffic is too much for me.
The time delays for her travelling to my hotel by taxi are terrible, and the taxi fares are now 12,000-16,000 pesos one way, depending on the time of day. Multiply that by 2-3 times a day and you see the problems.
I agreed to compromise and stay close to the "Megacenter" mall which is across from the soccer stadium, which is near her apartment. The closest real business hotel I have seen is the Hotel Hispano-Americano near the Paseo Bolivar area, still 15 minutes away north.
Does anyone know of a decent, clean, travelers hotel near the bus terminal, airport, or Megacenter mall, or the stadium? These are at the south end of Murillo. There's got to be something!
In May, I met a woman who lives in the same general area as your gfriend and I was staying at a hotel just around the corner from Versailles. I wish I could help you with the name of a hotel but I don't know of any, however, I met a cab driver in B'quilla who has been there for a long time and I could give you his phone number if you like. Perhaps he can help. He only speaks a little bit of english but I used him as a driver quite a bit after meeting him in May/June and he found a cheaper hotel for me a few blocks from Versailles. You could also check out tripadvisor.com. Maybe that site will have some helpful info.

HA!!!!! Good luck in that area Sal! The noise in Soledad would be the least of my concerns if I were you. My recommedation would be to stay where you usually do and count your loses. I know what you mean about the taxi fares. They have gone up significantly since the first time I went to Colombia. There are other gringos on the board that have more knowledge of the Barranquilla area than I do, but I do see them posting much anymore. Good luck!
By the way gentleman, I was able to locate several modest, yet clean business/travel hotels south of the downtown area near Murillo within minutes of Soledad. Not that I will be staying in any of them soon now!
There is the Hotel San Diego, which looks rather nice on their web site, in a neighborhood 5 minutes north of Soledad and the stadium for 80,000 CP, and there are two inexpensive, basic hotels outside the bus terminal in south Barranquilla---just north of the airport. There is another hotel just south of the Metrocenter (or is it Megacenter?) mall near the soccer stadium a block west of Murillo as well. And there is a legitimate hotel directly across the street from the Megacenter mall, although it is above a disco and was very loud at night.
I found these options using the Paginasamarillas.com (for Barranquilla) web site and then scrolling through the addresses and using my Barranquilla map and "Google Earth" to locate them.
My amiga confirmed these hotels when I gave her the addresses.
