I want to visit Cali this spring. Are there any good gyms there? So far I am aware only of the Crystal Palace facilities via the LatinLove site. Would like something with treadmills and fans or AC: (I can't jog in Cali can I?)... also cybex or nautilus type stuff. Thanks.

I don't see any reason why you can't jog in Cali. Take two safety pins and connect 2 100 dollar bills to the back of your shirt.Begin walking down town and wait for 2-3 bandits to spot you. Then START JOGGING. As they give chase just increase your pace!!!

So is it safe to conclude, then, that Colombia (relatively speaking) is dangerous?

Yes the palace has some workout equipment but it is very limited and is useless to get a good workout. As far as air condition, forget it, this is Cali , they don't have AC gyms. As any major city , Cali does have some very modern gyms. My favorite gym and what is considered the best gym in Cali is called Escandinavia , they are located at Av. 2N No. 3N - 87 Centenario( 3 minutes from the Intercontinental hotel ), phone number is 6677787 or 6676642. This gym has every piece of equipment you will need, its as good as any gym here in the states. And yes Cali is dangerous but so is Los Angeles. I have been to Cali 10 times in 2000 and never had a problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the detailed answer. I had done a Discussion Board search but didn't come up with any specifics. Thanks again.

I stayed at the Crystal Palace over Thanksgiving. They have a typical old style of gym with a bunch of Universal type equipment. I used it several times while I was there. It is basically just a weight lifting type of workout. The CP did not have a treadmill or any other type of aerobic type of equipment. Hey take a jump rope. They would have plenty of room for that type of workout. It is open air and no AC, it is only going to be in the mid 80s or so, so it is not that hot to workout.

As mentioned above, jogging in Cali could not be recommended for obvious reasons (makes you a clearly visible and easily accessible gringo target).

However, I did meet a senorita who had a couple of mountain bikes and she took me to a park nearby the CP (I have no idea the name or the location). We cycled for about two hours). It appeared completely safe with lots of families, joggers and other cyclists and couple of local soccer teams playing.

But my best advice for last is: The best place to get your aerobic exercise in on the dance floor with your new amiga the "Las Cascades" on Av. Sexta. Go dancing till 4 am a few times and you won't need (or be able) to go jogging anyway.

take care

For running, why not do laps around a soccer field, that should be large enough to do a mile in 4 to 5 laps, and less dangerous.

Yes, there are plenty of good gyms, just go thru the yellow pages when you get there, they are all about 5000 pesos per day.
