I will be flying to Cartagena in a couple of weeks and would like to know what to expect at the airport as far as customs, baggage, that sort of stuff. Will be my first time flying in.I lived in Mexico for a year, just drove in,all I needed was a drivers license.I would appreciate any info you could give,Thanks.
Are you flying direct to Cartagena from somewhere out of the country? Or are you flying from Bogota or somewhere else in Colombia?
I've only flown in and out of Bogota on in-country trips, but....
the airport is pretty small. I have not seen many lines (for departure). They do not seem to have many international flights. When I missed my flight, I quickly discovered that no one in the airport spoke a lick of English...so don't get yourself in a situation where you need something (unless you speak Spanish). The airport is modern. It was ATM machines, etc.
Passport& destination they like to know that(what hotel or where you will be staying) and a fricken neck brace so you can keep that whiplash under control from head jerking at all the beautiful latinas you are going to see..
Learn about there money and I would suggest a pick up at the airport.. Just like going anywhere except you need a passport!!!!!!!! Oh yaa, I hope you are not flying continental, if so you will probable need new clothes when you get there and a new suitcase.. Mine is finally coming to me today after 2 & 1/2 weeks, it made it to Cali Colombia on monday a week after I came back ..........

The same you would expect flying into the US from abroad. Have your valid US Passport in hand, wait in line to get your entry visa stamped, grab your luggage and play customs roulet. If you press the button and its green, go get your stuff checked, if not, happy go lucky.
Oh yeah, I forgot, every cab driver and his brother fighting to get your fare...
Smile and be polite. Don't p***s anybody off, especially those guys with MAC 10's slung around their necks. My first trip to Bogota I remember one customs guy looked at my passport and said (in English) "Welcome to paradise."
If you walk a block from the airport at CTG and flag a taxi down on the street, you will save half of the airport fare, or just take the bus which costs about $.40.
That goes for any airport in Latin america and I learned that the hard way. On my first trip to Cali, I got it up the wazoo for 65,000 COP. On my first trip to CR, I also got reamed for $55.00 USD! I didnt even get a thank you kiss.
In Cali, try go over to the domestic side and board the "colectivo" and go to the bus terminal, from there take a cab to your destination. Fare: circa 10-15,000 COP max.
In CR, get your luggage and stroll onto the main street and wait for the bus in front of the airport, go to the bus terminal in SJ, take a cab to your destination. Fare: circa 6-7 dollars in Colones.
Now I have someone there to pick me up, or I go to the bus terminals. No frikin way Im going to be taken like that again.
The best was San Andres. We got off the plane like the googly tourists we were and jumped into a taxi. Paid like 8000 pesos, which is alot down here. Got to the hotel and I could SEE THE TAIL OF THE AIRPLANE from the balcony! It was about 5 blocks! We laughed and laughed. (and drank and drank)
When I was leaving CTG airport (May 2005) back to the US, I was randomly selected by the police or securiy (the ones with the machine guns), anyway, I was pleasantly shocked that a female officer did a pat down on me...almost wanted to miss my flight intentionally...hot latina with a machine gun and big tits...now that is HOTTT!! Apparently security does not care about same gender searches as we do in our airports, but I am NOT complaining.
