That's funny...All I've heard about Medellin for the past two years is how much it has improved since Uribe's been in office. High literarcy rates, less crime. 1100 murders kind of cast a shadow on all of that. At this rate they're going to top that year Pablo decided he was more powerful than politicians.
All true. The majority of all the murders are gang related (70% +). The start was with the "Envigado Office" , an old AUC group that is now drug traffickers. With the arrest of the leader and the arrest of two brothers in Itaqui that ran a gang there, left a void to be filled, ergo the 'power' struggle. The 'real' effect is not much on the average citizen, these are thugs whacking thugs. The city is not sitting back and watching, the National Police keeps increasing the number of officers. Hopefully they (the traffickers) will go back underground and things will return to 'business as usual', we shall see.

It seams to me they are growing a US type gang life there, a little different from the narco big wigs like pablo..
The last year has been pretty bad statistically speaking, the most improvement in medellin was the last 6 years, it has changed a lot.. But since I get most of colombias news sent to me daily, it seams medellin has platoowed a little , but it is a far cry from before. The last year has had some big stuff occur..
Benijo maybe you should start following the news, it is just another great way to learn and keep up on the language, as well as keep up on the local politics and events..
Still Medellin is by far the most beautiful city in Colombia and from my expericence one of the best in LAM
Micky aint got nothin to worry about, he looks and acts like a typical average PAISA... Its the boys who cross the line a little to far who will pay the price..

LL,
Although I am non violent and probably not very able to defend myself, I don't let fear of the unknown rules any aspect of my life. I have travelled many places considered unsafe but I try not to be stupid.
I would not rent a car and visit the beautiful Colombian countryside because of the known risks. If you want to paint a nice picture promoting tourism to a city an extraordinarily high murder rate would tend to eliminate it from consideration. There are lots of beautiful cities without such a high murder rate.
Jim, you're making me see triplets with all these back to back posts
I wonder what the crime rate would be in any city, whether the US or Colombia, if all the gang bangers and drug trafficers who are killing each other weren't included in the stats.
Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn if these lowlifes kill each other into extinction. Unfortunately, innocent bystanders and cops get killed along the way...
