In Afghanistan there have been 1013 civilian deaths already this year. In Medellin there have been 1100 deaths. I guess if safety is your first priority, you should go to Afghanistan.

Actually if I were unhappy in the Philippines and single, I would move to either Cali or Medellin. I would definitely not go for nature. Costa Rica is far superior in natural wonders which are safe and easily accessible to a tourist. I place beautiful women far above personal safety. Cali and medellin have Costa Rica type weather..."La Tiera de la Primavera Eternal".

God dam, here you go again, bringing up CR where the most violent thing I saw in my three years there, was two Whores throwing drinks at each other in front of a whore joint in the street in Punteranas.....

That is a pussy place....

The 'real' effect is not much on the average citizen, these are thugs whacking thugs. The city is not sitting back and watching, the National Police keeps increasing the number of officers. Hopefully they (the traffickers) will go back underground and things will return to 'business as usual', we shall see.

Good to hear Micky as I just purchased a plane ticket to Medellin for Oct 1st. Hey, stupid question, but do u know if there is an ATM in the airport? It's been 4 years since I was in Medellin and I can not remember. I also hear the taxi price is 45,000 to the downtown?

Yes there are ATM's at the airport, but only upstairs, so you will have to grab your baggage and go upstairs before you go outside to catch a taxi. The taxi is now 50,000 to town. Anything else let me know.

And Cuba almost was #546. Like rpcv, I would not hesitate to go to Medellin [and to Exito] but it is important to understand that it is a dangerous city.

I posted this thread mainly because I read the news and like to post things that I think people should know..

Medelllin is like any big city, you dont go into some neighborhoods and like most US big cities, you keep to yourself.. People that are overly eager to know you or help you arent always the ones to be hanging around. Be careful in taxis. I have had my share of funky taxi drivers, sometimes you have to pay the gringo bill, that is the timme to pay it... Dont get in your head about it just put it behind you...

What I think some men have and some men dont is an instinctive knowledge of who is a good person and who wants to steal your $$$.. I am a pretty good judge of people, I remeber being with Micky and CLark in med we took a taxi the guy was overly helpful and animated, I noticed he never turned on the meter and he was jacking us for a couple of mil.. I got into him a little and based on my profesional taki taking experience he got us for 2 mil amaybe a buck. But if he had his **** straight I would have tipped him the 2 mil as I do that regularly... SO I am sure he will pay for it later. But it was a little gringo tax and in the end, it was nothing...

Also had a taxi ride where the guy thought he knew where he was going and I had a couple of gals with me at the time he was lost the meter kept running, I finally told him to stop and let us out, I paid him about 80% of the bill and told him he is lucky he is getting it.. Than we walked 3 blocks to mickys house..

Remember we are not visiting their country to teach them lessons on how to be. If they are ****ed up , they will pay later, it is all Karma.. Just keep your eyes on the people around you and dont get all upset at the little things.

The good thing about Medellin and most latin american cities is that you have areas where you just do not go and you have good areas. Poblado is very safe and you really can't stumble into a bad area if you are in Poblado. In Washington D.C. two blocks from the White House in the wrong direction and you are in serious trouble.
