Default 19% increse in crime in MEDELLIN

The Mayor had an emergency meeting . And declared no more back seat passengers on motorcycles. One of the most common ways of assasination in colombia.. Crime has increased dramatcially this year and so has their unemployment..

LL, I think it was way before you joined GT, but we has a thread that was the most profound thread ever in the nearly 10 yeard I've been here regarding Social Cleansing.

It started out with a Cali trip report I made many years ago. There was a homeless man scrawled on the steps of a closed business outside the out of the way restaurant I was at with my date and a friend and his date.

My date said the "street cleaners" would take care of him later. It could have easily been passed over while we were all having a good time. I couldn't get it off my mind and asked her what she meant. She said men on motos, even the police, ride the streets at night and shoot the homeless, druggies and down and outs. I was floored!

That trip report took a whole other turn onto Social Cleansing. WOW!!! Lots of posts and links. It was all lost in the Board hack back then

I don't think it can be revived with our current Board members, but it was a peek into what really goes on SOTB that so many close their eyes to or just don't care to know about, many are just ignorant; not to be confused with stupid. If you don't care, I have no use for you!

I remember some of the details if anybody cares. Unfortunately we've lost many of the members who posted about deep cultural things SOTB. I think it's a damn shame! If gringos in general cared about the culture, both good and bad, rather than where they can find a room full of ladies who would entertain the thought of going out with them, they'd be better off.

Is latin culture totally lost nowadays with the gringos who say they're looking for a soulmate down under?

(Where's that "confused" emoticon with the ? marks over its head. Some seem to come and go)

Nidia's brother was killed while driving his motorcyle because someone wanted to steal the bike.

I guess Colombia is way more dangerous than The Philippines.

Tonk,

Social problems and suffering are so prevalent everywhere in the third world. I see children begging for money all the time. I guess this is part of the culture and it makes me sad. But it is truly beyond my control. My "charity" consists of helping Mitch's parents in Butuan.

I can't help everyone. It's a good point that we should be conscious of the great amount of poverty and suffering int he places we visit. The general economy is one reason why we can find scores of women who would love to go out with us.

Actually, I do not want to alarm anyone, I expect it is only circumstantial, but yesterday I saw my own eyes, a newsletter on social cleansing, this dedicated to women, according to the information in this document, is for women prostitutes, and prepayment, and request that these women do not leave after 10 pm, who do not respond if they fall just innocent, I hope that terrorism is just writing, apparently all was quiet yesterday, if that crime has also increased, but I have no faith that we return to our past history.

crime is up everywhere, and its probably going to get worse. Actually it will because people are getting laid off in drobes down here in medellin.

It is still alot different than the past, and i agree that it has a long way to go, and it probably wont return to the way it was. The world will come back and jobs will return.

The AUC, or now the Aguila Negra are patrolling many barrios and have issued a curfiew of 10pm. if you are on the streets past 10 in some common barrios you can get shot.

of course this is not poblado they are talking about. these are the poorer neighborhoods.

medellin is still my favorite city in all of colombia.

There are also few areas where you can find peace. Good areas are El Poblado, Laureles), and Envigado. There is a large area between downtown and before Itagüí that has several nice shopping centers and a lot of safe areas where to live too. Downtown has a lot of law enforcement, but it is not so nice to be there. There are a lot of other nicer places.
