Fellows, I have received this link from a friend that states that their is a movement starting in Medellin to start killing prostitutes and Gringos that are their clients.
I heard about the cleansing of bad people in Barranquilla. I really didn't believe this until a friend from Bogota told me about the cleansing of bad people in Bogota. From what people tell me, late at night police, not in uniform and in secret, go out and and kill the bad people who are trouble makers.
Sounds like this is happening in Medellin, also.
Here are my friends advice. Don't walk the streets after 12:00. Also, they say to hang out in good places. This is really common sense.
I wouldn't dismiss this as bull**** or some urban legend. It is cause for concern. I also heard this from some people that I know living in Medallo.
Since you live in Manizales Dick, you of all people should know that the PARAS/GUERRILLA control access and civil liberty in many small towns and regions of Colombia.
I am going to break it down for you. For example, my girlfriend Daniela who lives in BAQ, has family that lives in Banco Magdalena, a town 6 hrs away from BAQ. The PARAS/AUC control that region. You need permission from them to grant you the right to visit your family or anyone living there. It is a way of life. Another thing to consider, since these people are in control, they implement and eradicate social cleansing. Crooks, thieves, drug dealers, junkies, low lifes are told to clean up their act or they will be murdered. Simple as that. Nobody dares to do anything wrong. There is a strong sense of security.
It is common knowledge in Colombia that Uribe is a sympathizer to the PARAS/AUC, his father was murdered by the FARC. Uribe is from Antioquia, he is a 'Paisa', so if a group of people in Medellin want to organize an urban militia to cleanse certain areas of crime and social outcasts, then this could be the start of something that all misfit gringos should take note, with little or no interference [and the blessings] from the local government.
When people organize under the guise of "La limpieza social", you can guarantee that changes are going to take place. To tell you the truth, I am somewhat surprised why this is even mentioned, militias in Colombia don't go around making community announcements, they just go in and do what they need to do. If that article is correct, then those good olé boys at the Medellin Mansion are in for a very rude awakening.

I would be very concerned about these militias! As the problem is that a gringo seen with a paisa or rola o calena whatever or wherever , they may end up being lumped into the mongering crew just because they are with a colombianita!
ALthough there are a few gringos that pop into mind with their high profile and lets just call them habits who will probably be in danger immediately, be careful out there boys!
I also don't want to say I like the method, but I would love to see a decline in mongering gringos!!!!!!!
I posted a Cali tip report about 3 years ago that was only one of many posts lost in the hack
In it I brought up something disturbing that was brought up in conversation with a friend and our dates at an out of the way Italian restaurant. Just across the narrow street was a man sleeping on the steps to a building. He apeared to be homeless and was dressed in ragged clothes. My date said the street cleaners would take care of him. My friend's date just nodded. It would have been easy to have passed the comment over but I wanted to know what they meant.
They both said that at night men, even the police, ride the streets and shoot the "bums", druggies and drunks. It was something nobody complained about and it was done routinely.
Other Board members said it's called "Social Cleansing". I don't remember if the thread took off from there or if a new one was started. It got a lot of responses and many links. One was about a group of young orphans who all lived in this abandoned building. One night the "street cleaners" came in and killed them all. It wasn't something you'd hear on the local news.
It was the most sobering topic ever posted on GringoTalk and it's a damn shame it was forever lost.
It doesn't surprise me in the least that many would feel that prostitutes and gringos could very well need "cleansing".

La limpieza social the way it is related does not look very nice and to be honest with you the milicias are created by the regular people so to speak and what kind of control are on them? ...It will be as LL said good to see the mongers disappear but what would make you or me look like a non-monger for those guys ??
If they really wanted to send a message to Gringos, and put a dent into the problem they are trying to address, they'd take out high profile Aussie Greg.
Until that happens I wouldn't worry too much.
On the other hand.... .. Aussie Greg really isn't a Gringo, is he...
Yeah, great idea. Let's kill the prostitutes....and their gringo johns. That will really help things. I suspect most of the prostitutes in Medellin are in the "business" because they are desperate - some with financial problems, some with the need to satisfy their drug habit. Most of the guys who frequent these prostitutes, whether on the streets or in the casas, are Colombianos, not gringos (or any other foreigner). So they can kill a few gringos and worsen (if that's possible) Colombia's reputation to the rest of the world....but not really stop the problem. Prostitution won't go away in Colombia....as long as there are Colombian men to primarily support it. I've heard some stupid ideas lately, but if this is really happening, then it takes the cake
