Default What to wear

Hi All,
I really appreciate all the responses to my customs question. One less thing to be freaking out about.
I'll be leaving shortly for Medellin.. How should I dresss? Are shorts and sandles OK? Will it be too cold? Would everyone know I am a tourist? I like shorts. They are cool. I probably should try to blend though. Thanks

Hi GRINGONER,
I did ask similar questions to Tinto on the thread ''CITAS, CITAS'' . Maybe that answers I got from them will help you...From what I understood, wear casual clothes, not be a ''YO'' ...

Gringoner,
I think you will enjoy Medellin. The weather can be cool if there is rain in the area. Otherwise it is very comfortable. I prefer to dress in slacks or jeans in Medellin and was not hot. I think you present a better image and it is more normal. The nicer you dress the more attractive you will be to women. They just are used to seeing it and apply status to clothing. Which is typical of the latin american places I have been. You would be most respected if you wore a suit and least respected in shorts. Jeans would be above shorts but below suits and so on. I think it should be illegal for men to wear sandles so you will have to decide that one.

I have a Colombian friend and it is unusual to see him in jeans and I have never seen him in shorts and he lives in Dallas. He also does not own sandles or flip flops.

I am jealous and hope you have as much fun in Medellin as I did. Hell have even more fun.

Usually you do not have to worry about it getting too cold in Medellin. The days are very moderate (usually 70's) and can feel very warm if the sun is out (which it often is). Both times I was there, I ran the air conditioner in my room. Medellin is called the "city of eternal spring," so that should give you an idea about the weather - not as hot and humid as Barranquilla or Cartagena, but certainly more warn and sunny than Bogota.

As for dress.....shorts are tolerated in Medellin (as opposed to Bogota, which is a more formal city and where you'll almost never see shorts on anyone other than children or someone exercising), but it will make you stick out more than you already will. I typically wear shorts from the airport and to the airport (since I like to be comfortable on the plane), but I only wear shorts once in Medellin if it's warm and sunny and I need to be outside (I get hot very easily). If you can stand it, wear jeans and slacks. Tennis shoes are OK during the day (although white tennis shoes is another gringo give-away), but other shoes are better (a walking shoe or boat shoes). At night, if you are going to a nice restaraunt or a disco, wear nice shoes and a nice shirt and slacks. You do not need a jacket, but a trendy jacket is nice if you have one and like to wear it.

Have fun.

Griz
