Just returned from a 10-day trip to Colombia. The main purpose of my visit was to meet my wife at the US Embassy in Bogota to register my newborn baby (she was born in C/gena in May) as a US citizen and bring her, my wife and my 2 year old daughter back home to the US. My wife went to C/gena while she was 7 months pregnant to have her family help with the pregnancy and birth (she said I was no help previously).

We went through the effortless process at the Embassy fairly easy. Here is an email I received from the American Citizen Service at the Embassy prior to my trip (this is what you need):

You can fill out the paperwork here in one day. We are open to the public from 8.30 to 12.30, Monday through Thursday.

You should both bring your passports, her LPR card, and the baby's Colombian birth certificate.

The passports, however, take two weeks to be delivered as they are all now printed in Washington, DC. Perhaps your wife can remain in Cartagena for two more weeks and have the passport delivered there? We cannot mail them back to the US, unfortunately.

If you'd like, we can do a locally produced emergency passport for the baby. That you could get same day. You would then turn it in when you get back home and exchange it with the Passport Agency for a full-validity passport.

To answer your other questions, the fees are $62.00 for the CRBA (Consular Report of Birth Abroad) and $82.00 for the passport. You need to pay this here with the Embassy cashier – we accept Colombian pesos, U.S. dollars or credit card. Also be advised that both you and the mother of the child need to be here – passport applications for minors (under 14 years of age) require the signatures of BOTH parents.

We hope this information helps. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

Best regards,
The American Citizen Services Section

The only other thing they requested that was not listed here was proof that I currently live in the US. They requested a recent tax return. Since that was not mentioned, I did not bring it. Sorry, they also wanted a copy of my previous divorce decree (which luckly I had with me). We were told to come back at 3:30 pm to pick up the emergency passport for my daughter. Therefore, I was able to have everything I needed in one day. So later that afternoon we departed for C/gena. I hope this helps.
