A US Perm Resident who has lived in the US for more than 5 years and her green card doesn't expire until 2012, travels back to Colombia for a year.....is there any penalties?

Yes, from what I hear, she could lose her status for being gone more than six months I believe.
That is how they nailed Fernando Zevalles(sp?).
From what I remember, they stopped him at customs when he tried to return to Miami.

In a nutshell- being gone for six months kills her time accrual for US citizenship applications.

More than a year can terminate her green card, although there are some waivers available. She would be able to enter the US and fight it out here in that type of case.

MOre than a year and an expired card? Most airlines wont let her on the plane

IF she is in and out of the US and only staying here a few weeks at a time, she can be placed into proceedings on arrival in the US
