Question Would you rent a room or your own place?

Gentlemen -

I am researching the rental market on GT.

I need your feedback on renting in Latin America. For example, say in Colombia- Bogota, Medellin or Cali and Rio de Janeiro. Would most of you rather rent a small studio/1-bedroom flat/apartment alone or would you be open to rent a large room with your own bathroom in a luxurious big flat/apartment with more space to move around? Keep in mind that your own private place could be double than renting a room and a Hotel would be double that. A 1-BR/studio offers more privacy but it's also more expensive where as a room offers less privacy, but you are around other gringos therefore you have something in common, camaraderie, english and activity coming and going. Please give me your thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

Ray, I would probably do that. I would be open to the arrangement until I met a woman I wanted to focus on. At that point I would want my own place.

Thanks Eman.... so you are saying you would rent a room in a large, spacious luxurious apartment?

Sounds like you are taking my idea Ray. jajaj
Not that I was the first.

I hopefully will have a place to rent out to gringos in the near future! I am going to buy a 2 o 3 bedroom in medellin. If one gringo wants it , I will just lock the other bdrs! It would be less for one person obiviously, if 2 guys want it charge a little more and open up another room, if someone is going with family rent out the whole apartment! Maybe $125 pero night and less for a week! But just think 3 rooms in a nice hotel or even 2 rooms is gonna run you $200 minimum!

Personally I would like my own place. Unless I was going with a friend like Tonk o Charlie o You! Than I would rent a 2 bdr, obviously a lot less than a hotel, but more than a one bedroom! So 2 people could split the cost of a 2 bdr apartment for maybe 80 o $100 per night! maybe 50-75 for a one bedroom. I would not want to rent with a bunch of gringos I don't know, most will be mongers in my eyes! So let them get their own place!

I also would rather hang out with Colombians, it always cracks me up to see a bunch of gringos going to colombia to hang out with a bunch of gringos!

So if it was nice like a hotel, tv, cable, internet, hot water, in Poblado! You would have a US lifestyle apartment for a good price. They are everywhere in Colombia now!

I have met 3 people down there in my last trips who do this! Not including Bogota Bob, who is probably one of the kings of the business~!

I tend to spend a week or two in a city and prefer to get an apartment if possible. I have stayed in an apartment in Bogota and in Medellin and also in Buenas Aires. I wouldn't be comfortable sharing with someone I didn't know and I like the space.

Ray -

Important to the question - what length of stay are you talking about? And other considerations - do you cook for yourself? - need maid; daily, weekly? - need a washing machine?

Love - Micky

Completely ignoring the cities and the purpose of the trips (woman hunting), assuming I went to another country, I would much rather rent a place with other people, granted that I knew something about them before hand and didn't run the risk of bunking with a bunch of insane lunatics. I don't like being alone. I have people over everyonce in a while from HC and CS, and I like meeting new people and having new friends so being absolutely on my own would kind of defeat that bit. Anywho, It's what I do here in SP anyways. I rent out the other rooms in my apartment to some very nice people I rented out a room for a British girl once too, for 6 months. She had no complaints about the living arrangements and neither had I about her, although my apt. is not a super luxurious, spacious, bla bla bla place. It's normal.

I mean going SOTB it's to get a feel of the country you're visiting too , not only chasing women even though many of us go there for that

Ray, One of the reasons I joined this site was for the potential of rondevousing down South with gringos with similar interests. If I can find someone decent to split the cost of a place, Great ! I would not want to hang out with them as that kind of defeats the purpose of Colombian immersion, but it is nice to swap stories and compare notes. I will be following this thread as I plan on spending some time South in the April-June time frame.
