Washington DC, NYC More Dangerous Than Bogota According to eWorld Research Survey for October PODER Magazine

Survey Finds That Top Latin American Executives Now Rank Washington and New York as More Dangerous Cities Than Bogota, Lima and Other Latin Capitals in Wake of Sept. 11 Attack

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2001-- In the wake of the terrorist attacks in the US, Latin American executives now believe that they are more likely to fall victim to a terrorist attack in New York and Washington, DC than in Bogota or other Latin American cities, according to the findings of a survey by eWorld Research for the October PODER magazine, part of the Miami-based Zoom Media Group. ``We were surprised by the results,'' said Ivan Casas, CEO of eWorld Research, ``we thought that the US cities would rise in the rankings after the Sept. 11 attacks but not become number one and two.''

New York City was ranked as the most dangerous city for terrorist attacks, followed by Washington DC, Bogota, Lima, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Caracas, Santiago and Toronto. ``Clearly, the size and scale of the Sept. 11 attacks are changing perceptions of danger all over the world,'' commented Isaac Lee, Editor in Chief of PODER, ``even in places like Latin America and, my country, Colombia that have long had the burden of fighting terrorist violence.''

eWorld Research surveyed 866 executives in 22 countries and was conducted on Sept. 14 and 15. Other findings by the survey also included that:

-- 88% believe that the attacks will have a negative effect on their

country within the next 6 months

-- 53% have already incurred costs related to the attacks (27% say

the attacks have already cost them $10,000)

-- 98% expect stricter immigration laws in US.

The full results of the survey can be found at http://www.eworldresearch.com/survey.

This is the classic comparing apples to oranges approach. If danger from terrorists is based on the number of lives taken in a single year, then yes both NYC and DC would rank number 1 and 2 on the most dangerous cities list. But one must realize that what happened on Sept. 11 was a one time occurance likely not to happen again in the near future (At least we all hope and pray it won't happen again).
Bogota and other Colombian cities as well as other cities worldwide such as those in Israel are under a more constant attack from terrorist groups (FARC, PLO, Hamas etc.)You still have a better chance of being kidnapped in Colombia than you do in NYC or DC or any other American city. You are still more likely to be a victim of street crime in Colombia than in this country.
Don't be fooled by "apples and oranges". You must still maintain your vigilance when traveling to Colombia.

I agree 100%. The NY disaster was an exogenous event, random almost, and not part of a constant barrage. Any other attacks are likely to occur randomly and could be just about anywhere, not necessarily in New York City.

I will have to agree with you on that one Bill. The researchers say "Top Latin Executives" feel... I am sure there is more "Bang for the Buck" for the terrorists we are dealing with here, blowing up some important buildings in NYC, Wash DC, Paris, or London etc... Than that of Bogota... just my .02

Anyone who is objective should realize that there is an incredible amount of random violence in our country. Not many Colombian school children get gunned down by their classmates.

I would not walk through certain places in US cities at night nor would I rent a car and drive through the Colombian countryside.

The position the US occupies in the world makes us a target and I don't feel that we can be at war with suicidal fanatics without further casualities on US soil.

I try not to do blatantly unsafe and foolish things in either Colombia or the USA and past that I try to live my life without being paranoid. I'm no more afraid in Colombia than I am here.

Peace,

Jim

I think these reactions are temporary. A poll taken a year from now will be very different. I don't think it will have much of an effect on women looking for a better life here with a good man.

Unhappy

Well, I'm saddened by these poll results for the same reason we all are.....

Namely, the worse Cali looks to the gringo traveller, the better I like it. 2G members excepted, of course.

But alas, sooner or later reason will prevail.....
