GUERRILLA LEADER GETS 24-YEAR TERM

LIMA -- A civilian court has sentenced a top Shining Path guerrilla commander to 24 years in prison, authorities said Wednesday.

Oscar Ramírez Durand was found guilty Tuesday night of carrying out more than 50 armed attacks against military patrols and civilian militias in the Ayacucho region in Peru's central Andes, court officials said.

Sendero Luminoso...they're a bunch to be reckoned with. I know more than one ex-Federal Police official that's had to leave the country because of them...and granted asylum in the U.S. because of the threats against their families.

There were less than a hundred left,but the're numbers could be growing again. They were in one of the high jungle coca vallies in San Martin, one of the last holdouts of the sendero.
