Default Re: Novia Murdered

Good point, Tinto.

I had experienced this issue when I was traveling to Peru in 2002-03, and had met a woman from Lima that I was interested in. The second time I returned to Lima for a visit with her, she informed me that her ex had told her that he would no longer be paying child support, as she now had a gringo to support her. This just reinforces the thinking that all gringos are "rich" and that allows the Latino ex to skip out of his obligation. I was not going to take over supporting someone else's children at that early stage of the relationship and that led to a final adios as I was leaving Lima.
I felt sort of bad about the situation that she was in when I left.

I learned a valuable lesson about dating Latinas in South America, but did not feel physically threated or afraid in this (Lima) instance. However, once when I had met a woman in Medellin a couple of years later, she called me in tears to tell me that she could not go out with me as her ex (boyfriend I think it was, not ever her husband), had told her that she would never see her 2 year old son again, if she went out with me.
And in a more recent relationship, the ex boyfriend told the Latina that I would be killed if she did not break up with me. She told me that she could not go to the police , as the ex boyfriend had connections within the police dept. and had the money and influence to buy whatever he wanted. She was afraid for her safety and that of her family, as well as for me.

With all of the many positives we gringos can experience dating Latinas, there are also caveats that we have to be aware of, whether the "threat of whatever" is directed at the woman, or at us, or both.

Sedona, very wise and accurate post.. you really need to carefully analyze the women’s current and past boyfriend status when you enter in to a relationship with a Colombiana... Life or the taking of it is very cheap in Colombia...
