This is great news for people living in the Midwest.

Has anyone traveled to Colombia on Spirit Airlines via Ft. Lauderdale?

I few Spirit in September: Detroit - Ft. Lauderdale - Cartagena

I have absolutely no complaints, although I admit that my expectations for airlines these days are VERY low.

The price was right (about $450 return) and the flights and transfers were very efficient. I think there was only about a 50 minute layover in Ft. Lauderdale on the way down. 3 of the 4 flights actually left early - a first for me! The interiors of some of the planes I was on were a little grungy - but again - I don't care. It's only a seat and I'm all about the safety, price, and reliability.

Be prepared to pay extra for everything (luggage, overweight, drinks), but that's becoming the norm these days.

Overall, I'd recommend the airline and hope to use them again around New Years.

Thanks Whitey. I'm considering flying with Spirit to CTG, then take bus to BAQ to see my woman.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if the airlines would start charging you for breathing the oxygen during cabin pressurization. . .

I flew Spirit from Ctg to FtL in June, just like Whitey says, not frills, but the price was right. Even with all the add ons it was still a good bit cheaper than anything else. They even had a non stop from Fla to LAX, so it worked for me. You do not get the bag of peanuts but you keep some plata in your pocket.

My understanding (from the Orlando Sentinel) is that the flight will originate in New York City. Between the Colombian population in NYC and the central Florida area, Jet Blue should have no problem filling flights. Jet Blue is officially back in my good graces (not that they care). Remember when I pitched a fit about them delaying commencement of the Orlando-Bogota flight....I thought it was a crock. We'll never know what happened for sure, but perhaps the U.S. government told them that if they delay too long, they'll re-assign the route to someone else. By the way, this new route is still subject to approval by the Colombian government, but why would they deny it? Also, introductory fares from Orlando will start at $99 (each way, I presume).

Oops ... just realized the true cost of my flight was actually $580 ... forgot about the points I redeemed.

Micky and Whitey, thanks for the information. Did you guys enroll in the Spirit club membership? Is it really worth it to enroll?

It looks like Spirit Air is the most economical airline that travels to Colombia. Let's see what Jet Blue's pricing will be in 2009.
