There are a variety of hotels in Laureles that are less expensive. You may want to get your girl to check them out. I always liked staying in the Laureles area. - Z

Thanks everyone. Micky, at this point I'm exploring all options, so yes, I'd be interested in getting rates on an apt., thanks. Also, is there a best way to book a hotel? Like, is calling the hotel directly generally better than using an online service such as hotels.com? The cheapest rate online that I found for Holiday Inn was $95.

As for a side trip, I'm having 2nd thoughts about Cartagena. I'd like something more off the beaten path and a beach and practical to get to from Medellin. Does such a place exist?

I've stay at the Holiday Inn. The rooms are mini-suites so there is no wall separating the bedroom area from the living/kitchen area. The rooms are really nice and everything is fairly new because I think it was built around 2006/2007. I like the idea of staying in Laureles though. It seems to me like a large percentage of the women I have chatted with online come from barrios in and around Laureles, Estadio, and Conquistadores.

Laureles -

I know something about this barrio, it is were we live. It is the 'old Poblado', and I beiieve it has more casas than any other barrio. Earlier this year Dora called four of the hotels in this area and they were not cheap. The rates for three of the four was 214,000 COP, and the fourth 'Mediterranio' (sp) was more than that. That is not to say that they all cost as much or more, but I am not a tour guide and am not calling 18 hotels to get rates. The area 'La 70' is really a very happening area, most Colombian tourists stay in this area. From just below the stadium, down to UPB (university) approx 2 km, they have widened the sidewalks using pavers (WIDE, like 10 meters, both sides) and it is going to be REALLY nice when finished. They may be done before Christmas, who knows. Both sides of 70 are lined with eateries, bars, discos, smaller hotels. I like it a lot, nearer a slice of Medellin than the super upscale Poblado. You will see no gringos and it is a safe and 'normal' area to hang, the exception being when there is a game at the stadium and you will get a lot of young guys taking up space. I have been there when that is the case, but just passing thru walking and I have had no problems. That's all.

Love - Micky
