Default Paradise Found

My enthusiasm for going to Medellin and the Cumbre was quickly changed into worry due to American Airlines. The Thursday I arrived at the airport, I learned my flight was delayed. Luckily, I had a fair amount of time in Miami to catch the Medellin flight and arrive at 7PM. Once we boarded the plane we sat for over an hour more before we took off. Now I was a little worried about the connection. I got off the plane in Miami and checked the departures. Luckily my flight had been delayed until 5PM and it was 4:50 now. I hurried quickly through the airport and got to the gate just in time to board. I am sure any checked baggage did not make it, but I learned from American Airlines long ago never to check baggage to Colombia through Miami.

I arrived in Medellin's Rio Negro airport and looked for Diego holding a sign or something. When I saw nothing I borrowed a phone from a nice gentleman and called Micky, who in turn called Princess2. In reality, the mixup was my fault as I told Princess2 I would be arriving Friday July 30th. When actually I was arriving Thursday July 30th. I looked at July 30th being the key point but Princess2 saw Friday. So I take responsibility for causing the confusion.

No problem, I get a cab and ask him to take me to Micky's place. On the way from the airport my enthusiasm began to return. Especially after passing 3 or 4 billboards. I was thinking at that point that all the women were stunningly beautiful and none of them wore shirts. I later learned the billboards were not in fact accurate as far as the shirt wearing goes.

As we came down the mountains heading for the valley we passed Las Palmitas and Angas Bangas(Both are restaurants I recommend. Great view from Palmitas, great Argentine meat at Angas. They both have menus). Once we got to Laureles the cabbie had to ask directions but finally got me to Micky's.

Micky lives on the fifth floor of a locked building and his bell doesn't work. So I buzzed and stood there for a while and then went out front and the security guard of course, knew I was there to see the gringo. While talking to the security guard out front we hear people yelling at us so we look up and Micky and Cuba are yelling down. So I go to the door and Micky comes and lets me in. That is the intercom system in the building, you stand out front and yell up at the apartment or wait and hope they look down. Or you get a cell phone like a normal person and call up so that Micky can send Mateo down.

I finally get upstairs and get to meet Cuba, CK, Dora and Mateo. We pass time on the terrace talking and such. LL, apparently already has found someone more interesting than us, so he was busy that evening. Cuba and Ck just kept talking about the women they had seen while sitting in a bar near a university.

Micky and Dora truly are wonderful people and I didn't think they could live up to the praise that has been heaped onto them, but they exceded all expectations. And Mateo is this incredibly intelligent young man who is considerate, polite and fun to be around.

After staying way past what a considerate guest would, Cuba and I headed to Princess2's house where the 2 of us were staying. No cabbie ever seemed to know who to get to Princess2's house, but if they could get close we managed to direct them from there. She lives in an area called Robledo and basically at the top of the mountain. She has an amazing view of the city.

I think it was 3 or 3:30AM when I got to sleep. I woke up at 6AM but decided to sleep some more. Around 8AM the parrot that lives in the lowest room in Priness2's house decided it was time for me to be awake. Plus the night before everyone had talked about how little sleep they got each night. Cuba had said he never slept more than 5 hours. I figured Cuba was already up so I went upstairs to his room, but the door was closed and there were no signs of life. So I went upstairs to the kitchen area and found an iron. I was going to iron my shirts, but I could not find an outlet anywhere near a flat surface. I ended up ironing a shirt on the counter next to the sink in the kitchen. I passed time until around 11Am when Cuba got up and we tried to get a taxi to take us to Micky's but due to the fair, all the taxis were occupied.

Good tr CIZA cant wait to hear the rest of your perspectives.. Cuba exaggerates just a little sometimes, got to love it, he says all he needs is 4 or 5 hours of sleep, but I guess 4 or 5 in CUba mean 8 or 9..

I wish I got to see prinsesas place I hear the views were amazing..

JAJAJAJAJAJA No I don't exagerate, I usually need 4-5hours or less as I am always working. Ciza forgot to say that I was in my room and I told him I was watching TV and was in this comfortable bed of Princess2. She is been really gracious to let her house and let me her bedroom all that time. She always tell me now that her house is my house as brother but I still have to thank her...Hey Ciza, that is it? Don't tell me you are already tired . So far so good though, and by the way don't forget to talk about those damned stairs we had to climb every morning from P2's house.
Good start for your TR my man. keep it coming

How could I forget the stairs. Like I mentioned P2's house is on the side of a mountain, so all the other condos/houses are basically stair stepped up the side.

When we were dropped off the night before, we had to go down about 6 sets of stairs to get to the house. At 3am I was so ready to go to sleep that I really didn't notice going down the stairs. In the morning, around noon, heading up the stairs for the taxi was a different story. Maybe it was being almost a mile and a half above sea level, maybe it was the lack of sleep or maybe it is the fact that I am horrible out of shape(most likely case), but man those steps were tough.

We got to the taxi a little winded and headed off to Micky's where we promptly had to face 5 flights of stairs. Cuba labored a little more than did I and I decided for safety reasons, I would always go before him upstairs and after him downstairs just in case. We met Micky, LL, CK and Mateo and headed to the mall for lunch.

Mateo had recommended the place and it was really good. Everything was like a thick stew which I hadn't expected when I ordered but that did not prevent it from being good(Something de Tierra). Cuba and CK had a good vantage point to look down from the second floor on the unsuspecting ladies below. CK and Cuba had in fact come up with a system of glancing at each other to let each other know when there was a lady of interest. And I must admit this was a target rich environment. Now just because they had a system of glances to convey their thoughts, please don't misinterpret this as their way of being subtle, because basically when they gave each other a glance, EVERYONE knew their was a beautiful woman near. And no, they did not do quick glances or use a polished spoon or a convenient mirror or store window to gaze at a reflection. No they were pretty much in full neck turning ogle mode. I can't really fault them though since all of us except Mateo and Micky were doing the same thing.

After lunch, CK, Cuba and Mateo headed out for el centro where they planned to further buy Mateo's love with replica cars, while Micky, LL and I headed back to Micky's. LL and I decided to go to Parque Gringo and have a beer and ogle from there.

It's great to hear that you guys and gals all had such a great time there. I wish I could have been there but it wasn't possible after having been in Colombia for 7 weeks in April and May and because summer is really busy for me. I look forward to hearing more about your trip.

LL and I are at Parque Gringo discussing things and noticing attractive women dressed nicely. There are a lot of sandals with the open toes but enclosed at the ankles, for those days when your toes are hot but your ankles are freezing.

After a while, we took a cab and drop LL off at his apartment and I head back to Mickey's for the ensuing party. I was there early but people started trickling in. I finally got to meet PS2, a very attractive young lady with a lot of energy and a lot of fun. Once she arrived we started drinking the rum and cokes. Then things get hard to remember.

At some point Prtyfly showed up with his friend and two young ladies. One of the ladies looked familiar to me and eventually I had to know why. Turns out that she was the assistant manager for the apartment Prtyfly and his friend were staying at and it is the same place I had stayed several years prior.

I don't remember the order of which people arrived, but every fourth person seemed to be a sister of Dora's. That isn't a bad thing since they are all attractive and good people.

At some point LG made it from the airport. Once she arrived the dancing could begin and man can she dance. Cuba was a salsa machine also, but he does have latin blood in him. CK was doing his best not to dance. LL showed up with his girl and he was smooth on the dance floor also.

There were some friends of Dora's there, along with some friends of PS2. Alot of nice quality people having a good time. My only regret is not speaking spanish fluently or dancing salsa better. Maybe if I take classes and practice maybe in 20 years I could dance as well as LG.

At one point Cuba went to get more rum alledgedly and we didn't see him for several hours. Turns out he was outside near the apartment with a woman and they were talking. Later he returned to the party.

As the party was winding down, some of us went to Las Palmitas in Poblado. Cuba told of this place in his report. There was a woman there who had too much plastic surgery. I thought it was a lady boy but they assured me it was just a woman who couldn't say no to plastic surgery.

I am not used to staying up past 11PM so back to back 3AM nights were taking their toll. I was pretty much done at 1AM and ready to go but we managed to stay until around 3PM before leaving. I think Prtyfly, his friend and the apartment assistant continued the party.

I was planing on sleeping late until around 6:30AM the damn parrot from downstairs started screeching. I managed to get back to sleep until 8AM when it was just too loud. I showered and got dressed, used the internet and waited until around 11AM or so when Cuba awoke.
