Only a small percentage of Latinos wear shorts. I occasionally see locals wear shorts even if the weather is quiet warm. Personally I think it is best to wear what is customary in a foreign country in order to blend in but I think there is a certain element of respect as well.

I remember sitting in a restaurant with a friend in Medellin and saw a couple Americans come in to dine dressed in shorts and T-shirts (wrinkled of course). The table next to us had a couple of attractive Latinas dining and when they saw these guys arrive they made a few unflattering comments about what they were wearing. I struck up a brief conversation with them regarding this and they thought they were being disrespectful by showing up to dine dressed like that.

Another reason to wear long pants is that most guys look better. With a handle of "guapochino" you want to impress the ladies with what you wear rather than exposing them to those skinny knock kneed legs don't you?

Clothes make the man is very true here. The women do their best to look good and they expect the same from you. You will see guys in Hard Rock Aruba t-shirts, those stupid baggy shorts and sandals (with socks), but contrary to what the guy seems to think, it does NOT make him look hip or cool. It makes him look like a gringo trying to be hip and cool. Cali is hot, but suck it up and wear a nice pair of jeans and a pressed button down shirt and you will catch their eye. Oh, and shoes matter too. I don't think Colombians wear sandals at the beach!

In the States you can buy very lightweight kahkis or chinos that work well in hot weather. I wear worsted slacks and laundered, pressed buttons dow shirts for dinner dates.

Dont wear shorts, dont weart T shirts dont wear sandals and dont wear sneakers unless they are gleaming white.

And wear good cologne.

BenJ -

Come to Medellin and you will see. Although I do not advise it for others.

Has anyone here been to the coast? Most of the costeņos wear shorts. Even my different girlfriends there have bought me shorts and sandals to wear. My friend came to Bogota from Barranquilla and he didnt even have many pants to wear in Bogota. I would hate and have hated to walk a long distance to a club in jeans down Bocagrande, even at night with the 95 degree temp. But Cali is a little different of course.

The coast is a different world, but in any other city, even Monteria which is just as hot but 40 miles from the ocean, you don't see shorts. But go ahead and wear them. What could go wrong?

I wear shorts in the day and I have visited cali 4 times already.

I joked about this one night with mi amor and she started laughing..
We went to ave 6 and sure enough while drinking some drinks there were plenty of colmbianos wearing shorts and she says its normal there.

Then from that day I could spot a cali male wearing shorts every other minute, I also seen many gringos too.

Wear whats comfortable for you and dress nice when you go out at night or to dinner or something but keep it simple no jewerly or bling.
