Unhappy Best Spanish to English and vise versa translator....

Gentlemen,

After joining Colombian Cupid I have discovered that I HAVE to learn Spanish. In the mean time I am looking for the best web based translator for Spanish to English and back....

I have been using Babel Fish and it sucks.....any other suggestions would be amazing. It would be a great tool to have here on the site actually. I wonder how hard it would be to design....

Try the Franklin products. In fact, if you can buy it in Colombia, all the better as they sell the La Rouse version instead of Webster and it has a more complete vocabulary. I tried to get it from Franklin directly, but it is only sold out of the USA. It has the translations of some "bad" words in it so I suppose the moral police here frown on it being available.

UW, I don't recommend any of the online translators. I don't mind giving credit where credit's due. Brother Austin posted this link awhile back www.translation.paralink.com

I admit to being somewhat lazy after the day is done with translating extensive emails from SOTB where their spelling and punctuation can be at times lacking One rainy Saturday I got an email from an amiga in Colombia or Peru. I read it and knew what she was saying, misspelling and all. I ran it thru 3 computer translators, GlobalLink, Bablefish and the link above. I was not impressed, especially Babel****. It really sucked.

I found the link above to be the most accurate by far. Hardly perfect, but you can get the jist of any email if you can correct the misspellings and punctuate it yourself before running it thru a program. Um, I guess if you can correct the poor spelling, you don't need the link Run it thru and only correct the punctuation which screws up any translator. That's not too hard to do.

Give it a try, you just might like it. It's no excuse for not learning Spanish, I just know what it's like to suffer thru poorly written emails from our lady friends SOTB.

I agree that no free on-line translators are going to be great. I started with Babelfish and also used the translator from Paralink at one point. The one I finally ended up using was freetranslation.com.

Now that I'm married and my wife and step-daughter are here, if we have one of those "translation" moments, we use the L &H conversation utility that's on my hard drive.
