I'm not a fan of online (or electronic) translators. In important conversations I think they have potential to do more harm than good... but sometimes they are helpful/fun to check your spanish, or compare it against another source.

The one I hear the most about is "Babel Fish", but someone, on some forum, posted about one that I have checked out that is MUCH better than Babel Fish:

Buena Suerte!

I have Harrap's Concise Spanish Dictionary and 5 semesters of Spanish at night school. Beats the cr_p out of anything described above. I could see using an electronic translator if you're just looking to meet women through an internet site. But, respectfully, anyone who has to use a computer program to communicate with his novia has no business becoming involved in a committed relationship. Hit the books, take some classes, listen to Spanish language T.V. and radio. It's fun, great exercise for the mind, and the most important thing you can do to improve your image with latinas.

For word and phrase translations, I have had great success using wordreference.com. I don't visit their boards/forums anymore because the moderators are assholes and the people who post most often are language professors or linguistics pros who can't seem to answer a question like a real person. Just my opinion. But, check it out for yourself. You might have better luck with those people.

I agree with the paralink site.....I struggled with translation until I found it. One of the things that alerted me to the fact that babelfish sucks was that I was being perfectly understood with paralink but her using babelfish when I wasnt on a pc and on my phone IM was causing me more headaches than it was worth. i finally told her Espanol only so i could undertand her. The comment from miguel about no business becoming committed I think is way off base. I feel one of the biggest reasons we feel the way we do about each other is the language barrier. It is amazing how much more I know about this wonderful lady than I did about my ex wife of ten years. I think it develops a closeness you might not other wise have when you spend time teaching each other the language, and lets be honest, it is so much nicer to be able hit on those hot topics like sex when you can pretend to goof and judge the reaction. Cant do that with an AW without going to jail or end up in a lawsuit if its taken the wrong way. You just have to wait until you waste your time on a few dates and a relationship maybe to find out that the skinamax movie you watched by accident was more exciting. I find that learning about a person the culture and a new language is a lot more fun when you are a complete outsider, I for one vote that you should try to find a non-english speaker as an amiga/novia and go for it. I am learning a lot more quickly with her than i did in all my prep to try to learn on my own. When i try to teach her english it sharpens some of the stuff I have learned but forgot because I didnt use it daily..........just my 2 cents
