I was unsuccessful in getting my bank to issue me a backup debit card that is good for both ATM use and for purchases. Apparently in a few months the bank will begin to offer this.

But in the meantime, I have another account with just an ATM card on it, good for use only at ATM machines. The logos on the back are Plus, Accel, Star, etc. My question is: Will it be easy to use this card in Colombia at ATM's there? In other words, this card, since it is only a basic ATM card, does not have a Visa or Master Card logo on it, so will it work in machines down there with the above logos on it?

thanks

Bill

Bill,

I didn't use my debit by choice; instead I used my ATM card that only showed the plus access on the back. The only place that it worked consistently at was Bank Cafe (You can't miss it, Bank Cafe uses the big red sign for its bank name to be displayed on) they are all over and easy to use.

I prefer the ATM card only because it doesn't give access to my checking account like a debit card would. If I needed a credit card I would bring that along and leave my ATM in a safe or hidden in my room. I tried never to carry more then one card at anyone time.

Personally I don't think you'll have a problem since your ATM seems to have more key access logos then my ATM single plus logo has. So take it along with a credit card. I just wouldn't use the credit card for cash advances since they start to accrue interest from day 1.

BTW: The rate I was getting for both credit purchases and ATM cash advances was about 2130 - 2140 pesos on the dollar. A cash advance of say 300,000 pesos was costing me approx. $140.00 (not bad huh)

BILL - I AGREE WITH FJS. YOU ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT THE CHARGE CARD FEATURE.THE REGULAR ATM CARD SHOULD WORK ANYWHERE THAT THE SYMBOLS ON THE CARD ARE POSTED. I HAVE HAD EXPERIENCES WHERE THE CARD DID NOT WORK AT ONE MACHINE BUT WORKED AT THE MACHINE 1 BLOCK AWAY. FIGURE IT OUT? WHEN YOU USE THE ATM CARD THE ATM WILL ASK YOU IF IT IS A SVINGS ACCOUNT OR A CURRENT ACCOUNT. IF YOUR ATM ACCOUNT IS TIED INTO A CHECKING ACCOUNT, THEN YOU NEED TO PRESS " CURRENT ACCOUNT" FOR THE CARD TO WORK.
