Thanks Angie for all the great information.

That's a wonderful picture of you with the wings.

How come you know so much about this subject. Are you an attorney or something?

No boat here. I sold it. Some say that's the second happiest day of a man's life. The first being the day you buy your boat. Now, that doesn't sound like much of a life to me, but I've heard it said.

That saying of yours is interesting. And, I've found your other posts interesting too. Don't mind me, I'm just happily married to a Calena.

No harm, no foul!
I have never owned a boat, although I have always said "that the only thing better than owning a boat, is having a best friend that owns a boat"

I am happily married to young beautiful Latina with a "muy Guapo" 3 year old son!

So to continue the metaphor:

It appears we are in the Same Boat after all!

You can make money in Real Estate even when prices plummet. I bought a rental house for 18000 and 15% (2700) down. This rental gets 375 a month (low for area) and will pay off the mortgage completely in about 5 years. Now if this house's value falls 50% in 5 years, I will still have a house worth 9000 with only 2700 invested. I have not visited Colombia yet, but it seems that if you find the right property that caters to Gringo visitors, then you have an untapped market full of potential. Use it whenever you visit and rent it out the rest of the year.

Well Ray I guess we could debate the Philippines versus Brazil is the . Which has the best women and which has the laws and customs least favorable to foreigners.

Miraflores,

Until you sell, your propert has not generated any return. Lots of people speculate and make money but it’s speculation, not investing. That was my point.

The investment scenario I outlines would be flipping (and highly speculative) if the person bought he property planning to sell it in two years. I just was pointing out that in the US, will 5% and 0% available, property could appreciate with a minimum investment. In most foreign countries, a sizable DP is required.

Speculation vs. investment....interesting stuff. But, of course, it's always possible that a gringo will want to buy a place in Colombia (or elsewhere) as a second home....especially if the gringo plans to spend a fair amount of time in Colombia now or upon retirement. Technically, this is an "investment," but not like the kind of investment were someone is looking to generate a return through rental. That's kind of where my interests lies right now...although the finances have to make sense to do it. Angie's comments were very helpful. I actually married my wife in Colombia....so have that going for me. If we buy a place with marital assets, it sounds like I'll be OK (of course, if things don't work out, which I'm not expecting at this point, that would be the first thing I would offer to the wife as part of a settlement).

Interesting to here more perspectives on "investing," "speculating," etc.
