Default Rio Real Estate.... A Carioca Gives it up!

Gentlemen -

A friend of mine born and raised in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, a local Carioca I`ve known since 2003 sent me this email about buying property in Rio de Janeiro and I thought I would share it here.

Guys,
Just as an example Iīm gonna tell you something that is going on in my neighborhood. The favela close to my house is growing faster than ever. There are 40 houses in my street, 22 are for sale. The worst thing is that nobody is buying **** here. The place where I work is also a place with the same kind of problem. The favelas are growing and all the people who want to sell their houses and apartments are unable to do it. The other day I was talking to a friend who has an apartment in Leblon. Big apartment, great view, great location and the broker said his apartment is worth 1.3 million reais. He tried to sell it for that price and nobody even looked at it. So he lowered to 1.150MR and the same thing happened. Now itīs down to 850 thousand and two people looked at it with no intention to buy it. Thatīs why I advise you not to buy an apartment here. If you want to stay here, rent. We are trying to sell our house for seven years. It is too dangerous to buy an apartment and not being able to sell it when you want to.

You wanna know more about Rio? My neighbor got kidnapped. One kid got shot in Leblon for no reason. So you may want to know why we donīt leave this place: My father has a company and itīs not easy to build a reputation here like he did. I just finished my course and Iīm just waiting on the answer of a job interview.

Two of my neighbors abandoned their houses and moved to small towns. Itīs not only about violence. For example on christmas night some guy in the favela rented a sound speaker and left the music on from 10 am of the 24th to 6pm of the 25th. Nobody in my street slept at all. It was just so loud we could nīt even talk inside our own house. The police didnīt answer the calls so nothing happened. If you want to know what I advise you to do is go to the Northeast. People are much more friendly there, the towns are much smaller and the climate and the beaches are great. I would go to João Pessoa, Maceió or Natal if I could.

Unfortunately, there are only a few places I can make the money I make doing what I do in Brazil and none of them are in the Northeast. Man, think about it. You donīt want to put your money here. I would never do that. There is no safety here on whatīs going to happen next. Stocks here would earn you a much greater return. If you still want to buy it anyway, I would look in Jardim Botânico or Laranjeiras. I thinks those are the only good places left here.

Best Regards,
T

WOW RAY This person is a real good friend and like you a lot because she gives you apparently good advices so thanks for sharing it with us.
I wonder why is it so bad actually?? Is it mostly for the economic situation or what?
I recall seeing a report on TV where the cops don't even bother arresting [people and shoot them right away when they catch them and justify it because they had a weapon even though the bandido was controled or arrested
Anyways thanks for sharing
