Good Luck SouthLondoner. I have a degree in Computer Information Systems and 7 years of experience in database administration and the implementation of MS Dynamics Axapta. I've been diligently looking for a job in Colombia in the IT field for the last 2 years and haven't found anything. Before I was layed off in Jaunuary I worked for a Chinese Medical Supply Company managing their Supply Chain and Logistics Department here in the states. Even with that experience I couldn't find work in Barranquilla at the port.

Dell and HP both have offices in Colombia and they offer positions occasionally. I've applied for more of them than I can count. But most of these positions are in sales and consulting and require travel all over South America. They also prefer a native Spanish speaker that knows the "lay of the land" as all of your potential customers would be Latin Americans. Also remember that you would be compensated on a Colombian pay scale, no matter what your position is or what company you worked for. So although experience in Oracle is very valuble anywhere in the world, you probably wouldn't earn more than $30K or $40K USD a year, and I'm being very generous. From your user name, I would assume you're from or are living in the U.K.; so I imagine that figure looks even worse on your end when converted to Stirling Pounds. To be honest that is more than enough to live comfortably there; but I know very few men with your education and experience that would be willing to take such a drastic pay cut. Besides that, you will almost definitely find that your superior and your associates at work are A LOT less "savy" than you are with computers. I hate to be insulting, but my 12 year old nephew can probably do more with a computer than a anyone that has a Computer Science Degree from a Colombian University. No one really learns anything about working in the IT Field in college. Most of the knowledge a person has is picked up from experience or just clowning around on your own. But the guys down there are really ridiculous.

If you are sincere about living there, as I am, I would recommend finding a position you can perform remotely with a company there in the U.K. You can make the European big bucks and reap the fruits of the Latin American lifestyle at the same time. There is a guy on the board that has done this before but I haven't seen him post since the board has come back up.

Thanks for the advice, although it is disheartening. You are right 40KUSD is not a lot compared to wages here. However the cost of living is so high here. Also my wife can not cope with the cold.

Default Cold weather in the UK

Hi,

I too am living in the UK moved over from Denmark after having been employed with a German company in Madrid, Spain.

My (ex) wife could also not stand the cold in Denmark which was why we moved to Spain.

May I suggest you look for a job in Spain. It's easy to bring your wife as she is your family and you a EU citizen with right to locate to any country in the EEA with as little hassel as possible.

For jobs check
Empresas de Trabajo Temporal en Espaņa (ETT'S) - Directorio | ETTS, Ofertas de Empleo y Recursos Humanos
Trabajo temporal, principales agencias ETT, ofertas de empleo temporal y recursos humanos - Flesko.

So I have a quick question. Clearly there are IT jobs in Colombia, they exist everywhere. So is the native talent that great that they don't feel the need to bring in any foreign workers? Or is it just that there's such a small amount of work that the local resources are more then enough to meet demand?

Perhaps it is because they don't have SOXs?
