Reaction to Uribe/Chavez Confrontation
After the heated verbal exchange between the two presidents, Colombia's chancellor, Jaime Bermudez, highligthed the creation of a commission of friendly nations to help overcome their differences

A heated verbal exchange between Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe and Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez flared up on Mon. at one of the Rio Group leaders summit sessions being held in Cancun (Mexico). The creation of a commission of friendly nations to help resolve differences between the two countries served as a means of moving beyond the unsavory encounter between the two leaders. According to Colombia's chancellor, Jaime Bermudez, the friction between the presidents has already passed into recollection and now it's time to find mechanisms which will allow for the leaders to fulfill their assigned commitments at the summit. The clash, according to sources who attended the meeting, began when President Uribe complained to his Venezuelan counterpart about the trade embargo with Colombia. Chavez's response was that the measure was taken based upon an alleged plan in Colombia to assassinate him, which Uribe denied. According to the source, Chavez threatened to leave the meeting as the tone of the debate intensified and Uribe challenged him to "be a man, stay here and debate me up front, you who insults from a distance and when we're face-to-face nothing is said."
