Gentlemen -

The design of the new Osteo Donor Badge is finished. That said, we hope you take the time to read and research the National Osteoporosis Foundation website to learn more about a disease that can be prevented and a disease that can be treated later in life. Women are affected more than men, so women need to be made aware of this disease -- a preventable disease!

If you wish to make a Donation to the NOF, you may do so via GRINGOTALK Donations: http://www.gringos.com/forum/billspaypal.php

All Donors are awarded an Osteo Donor Badge and official updates from the NOF about our donations to their organization.

-Thanks

Just curious Ray, why was this particular organization chosen to help out?

Tinto -

I know people with Osteoporosis. My Mother is one, and if I can help the organization by way of donating money, raise awareness, etc to a reputable organization and cause then I will.

Would you like to donate to a good cause? It's really easy.... you can donate via Paypal by way of GT or direct from the NOF website.

FWIW- we don't have any kind of relationship with the NOF but we plan on contacting them in the near future to notify them of our efforts here on this Board. That said, we are not gaining anything from doing this and our time to implement the fund drive, raise awareness and design of the Osteo Donor Badge took very little effort. We've thought about other non-profit organizations and of course the suffering in Latin America, but the risk is to high there. That said, we feel the NOF is a reputable organization trying to do the right thing. It's also a way of giving back to the world for what the world has given to you which is life itself.

Gentlemen -

After more thought this is not such a good idea. These days you just don't know where your moneys going when you give to charities. That said, we've decided against endorsing any charities and this Topic scheduled for deletion tomorrow AM.

-Thanks

I like the idea of giving where we can, and I think making a difference in one of the countries we all know and love would be a good act on our behalf.

I think the charity you chose Ray is more personal for you, but I bet if we had a SOTB charity here at gringos, we would find a much more helpful crowd!

I was really interested in TINTO's friend who was helping out a small community in a very poor area in medellin!

I will start by donating $100.00 to a cause to help our latin brothers and sisters out in another country! Just find us a worthy cause!

I really like the idea of a university education! Anyone know what that costs in LAM? Or anything to help some family put food on the table!

Maybe the men and women who are there full time can find us a charity to sponsor?? Anyone game???

I know we need help here, but nothing compared to the poor of LAM! Some of our poor & welfare families & homeless have it better than some of the middle class & working class down there, let alone the poor & uneducated!

Ray,

Please find my donation to the NOF at your PayPal account. My mother participated, and still participates, in the National Women's Health Initiative that the NOF helped sponsor together with the NIH.

NOF's assistance for Osteoporosis prevention is throughout the America's...so, I would imagine that in some small way some of our donations will eventually reach someone we know that is affected by Osteoporosis.

I think a few mothers can use a little support from a few sons. Hmmmm?

Captain -

Yes, we got your generous Donation, and thanks.

I've decided to let this thread stand. That said, I'll leave this new optional Badge open for anyone wanting to donate. Like the Captain says, I also heard the NOF is a viable and honest organization but nobody knows for sure if 100% of the money goes directly to helping people with Osteoporosis. When we get a build up of Donations, we'll pass the Funds along to the NOF and I'll personally report back with the total amount donated and their response to us via email.

LL- regarding your valid comments on assisting impoverished people in South America; that's viable, very much so. However, after the unfortunate incident of the French guys in Rio de Janeiro: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6402677.stm ...and some feel Robert Vignola's efforts with his adoption website may have put Robert 'out there' are reasons enough not to be directly involved with charities SOTB. Once they find out a gringo is involved-you're a target and labeled a 'rich gringo'.

-Thanks again Captain, and your the new Osteo-Badge implemented later today or tomorrow AM.
