Default Expat in Peru now with my 2 children and wife

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

We made it safe to Chiclayo Sat morning at 7.30 am. We had a few little problems but we made it here.

I am going to keep posting in this one thread like a journal. I am going to be very frank on our experiences and mistakes I have made and will make in the future so some one reading this can learn from them. I will also post all the right things I do.

We left Toronto at 2.20 pm from Toronto and got into Miami about 5.30 pm. We had a 6.5 hour layover in Miami and then flew Lan airlines too Lima. Our flight got in early and we arrived at 4.15 am. Landen vomited on the plane a lot and got air sick. The stews were great helping clean it up and putting blankets on the seats. They told him donīt worry a lot of people get airsick. I donīt know if it was air sickness or his nerves.

After clearing immigration , customs and getting our bags we have to move it. We got the green light so we did not have to have our bags searched.

So when we land we find out one of our suitcases is missing. It has all of my clothes in it. I had a suit in another bag with a couple of shirts.

We get to the Lan counter and they canīt do anything and blame american airlines and miami Lan. I get a hard time from a agent because of all the carry on bags we have. He tells me I have to pay more and I argue with him that I have a bag missing and we flew from Toronto to Miami and miami to lima with no extra charge.

So I have to fork over the money for 2 extra small bags or leave them there. The clock is ticking down on our flight so I pay and we run to make our plane. We made it with 10 minutes to spare.

I have to say that the agent did after try to get authorisation to not charge us but a manager said sorry but no. I like Lima airport and immigration is a breeze with the immigration lady talking with the kids about peru and giving us the maximum 183 day visa. My son Landen told the immigration lady that she was hermosa.lol She told him all the girls will love him in peru.

We will have to leave Peru in 6 months for a day , do a border run and come back in from another country.

to be continued...

The emotional reunion with my Roxi

SFNM,

Welcome to life as an expat. It's a wonderful experience, much much better than a simple vacation.

I'm glad everything worked out for you. The experiences you had from the airlines will be repeated many times over as you deal with third world government requirements and red tape. It's a small price to pay for living in paradise with the ones you love.

And the sooner you get used to things not working the way they did in Canada, the happier you will be! They DON'T and never will. It has been a struggle for me, but is their way and I am their guest.
Thank you for the journal. I imagine many of us will get a lot from it.

Awesome so far SFNM.

What did you expect they only had 6.5 hours to get your bags from one plane to another in Miami. You are lucky you got any of your checked bags.

I can't imagine putting my whole life into two bags and a carryon. It fit well in a Civic though.

Good luck.

Glad to hear you made it ok SF! Don't let American blame it on Lan. They tried that **** with me once. I was like "Ok, so you (American) put my luggage on a plane in Atlanta to Miami and Aces (in this case Lan) just decided not to put it on their plane?"

Now go forth and tell your neighbors to close their windows tonight, there's going to be a 2 person party that'll last until till the wee hours of the morning, and it will be loud!

SFNM, I'm really happy for you and your family. This is the best decision you've ever made...

Let the good times ROLL! We're glad you made it Peruman! I imagine Roxy must have been so excited seeing you guys at the airport. Looking forward to hearing about your life south, way south, of the border.

BTW, if what you carried on luggage falls under LAN's stated policies I would contest those extra charges:

Carry-on Baggage Allowance

Each passenger may take:

Baggage that exceeds the allowance will be transported as checked baggage
Due to operational reasons, some flights may enforce carry-in baggage restrictions.
