That is absolutely insane! The arresting officers should be thrown into jail for making a crime out of Brasil's new law. I hope that a lot of people protest to get this father released. What a travesty of justice.

Too many people seem to spend their lives waiting to be outraged. And jump on any opportunity. If the world was more live and let live, it would be a much safer (and more pleasant) place.

This is why you need to make it your business to know the laws of any country you're visiting. There's an Argentine soccer player who is/was facing the prospect of years in Brazilian prison for using racial insults against a black Brazilian player a couple of years ago. I'm not excusing what he did, but he was flabbergasted to find himself in handcuffs by the end of the game. Personally, I almost found out the hard way that my dealings with a certain employee there (questioning her about a possible register shortage!) could have gotten me thrown in jail.

True Bueller, but this "violation" of Brazil's new law, even if read by that Italian, would probably not have be construed as committing an offense against it by kissing his daughter publicly. It isn't as if he was using a racial slur against another person on giving the one finger salute by that one defiant tourist at the airport, he was showing some affection to his daughter for heaven's sake! It's not as if he was a tourist doing mongering either as he's married to a Brazilian. When those police questioned both the mother and daughter and found out that there was nothing to be concerned about they should have turned to the busybodies and chided them for being so prudish and wasting their time.

It's a case of a police man being over officious.

I learned as a referree for over thirty years, anyone can read a rule book but you need to have an understanding of what the rule is supposed to do beofre you decide when to blow your whistle.

Early in my career a player fell down near the free throw line and was indeed in the lane for more than three seconds so I made the call. The veteran I was working with explained that the three second rule is to give the defense an advantage in gaining rebounds b=y not allowing the offense to camp under the basket. Clearly a player on the floor 13 feet away from the basket didn't gain an advantahe for a rebound and this should have been a "no call".

It's too bad police men are not taught common sense.

I agree with what the brothers have said thus far one have to educate themselves on the laws of the country they are in. However police are suppose to be the embodiment of what it means to be a upstanding citizen in any country and have logic and reason before action is took. This is just crazy. That's a damn shame

In what country is THIS? Police are rarely known for logical restraint, often preferring to club first ask later. (and if the club is closed, they just mace you)
