Smile Carnivale in Rio???

Hello Brazilian goers,

I am travelling to Brazil to spend a couple of weeks during Carnivale for some R and R (I know it sounds like an oxymoron). I am currently planning on spending Carnivale in Rio however I am travelling alone and I'm a little concerned about the controlled chaos in Rio and that I might have to fear for my safety instead of relaxing.

For those of you that have experienced Carnivale in Rio my question is whether I should stay in Rio and give it a go or travel to some other place such as Porto Seguro or Buzios for more of a relaxing and enjoyable vacation time???

A little background of me: I am 39 and although I have never been to Rio I have been to Brazil many times and speak fluent Portuguese.

Thanks for any insight you can bring.

Thumbs up Re: Carnivale in Rio???

Curitibano -- Welcome to GT.

You must experience Rio Carnival at least once in your life. The biggest and arguable best party in the world, and it is safe. But I recommend going one night... at most two nights. I paid about $US700.00 (2007) for one night and I had the next best seat down from a Freezer (private club box). Go the last 2 nights and buy your tickets at Samba Brazil in Visconte de Piraja at Joan Angelica. I don't recommend buying anywhere else because it's to risky. Most importantly, go to the event in a structured secured big bus, like a Greyhound with other tourists. I tried to save a few reais and went via Taxi -- big mistake! The area is dangerous outside the gates of the event.

Enjoy Rio Carnival... once in a lifetime experience you'll never forget.
