Azjetpilot,

Interesting that you mentioned the movie Turistas, I was talking to a lady at work about traveling SOTB and she told me that she will not set foot in South America but would go to Central America. She is Mexican. She advised me to watch that movie and told me a little about it. I guess this was set in Brasil where gringo tourists were being held captive and subject to be involuntary organ donors for filthy rich people. That movie was not very well received and the main actor apologized to the Brasilian government and people on one of the late night talk shows last year. The movie was labeled stupid, confusing, and horrorable. If everybody believed it, tourism in Brasil would fade. This movie has been reported to make many brasilians angry. I don't know if it is true or not but if it was wouldn't we have heard about it by now. Something like that would probably make the world news. Verdad?

Carlos

Here is a LINK to the 2006 movie, Turistas, Go Home, with a YouTube clip.

It doesn't look like that bad of a movie. I can see why though the Brazilians didn't like the movie but my impression is that Brazil, or I should say the Brazilian government, isn't that big on throwing out the welcome mat to visitors.

I saw that movie awhile back, it had some pretty sick scenes of organs being cut out of people who were conscious. You can bet that if there were any truth to it, the Brazilian goverment would do everything in its power to squelch it. The movie is more likely an urban legend - like the ones about going to vegas, gambling alone, someone slips you a micky and you wake up in a hotel room with a note saying dial 911, we just took one of your kidneys.
Central America can be just as dangerous as South, once had a gun pulled on me in central for asking the wrong girl to dance.

Y'all would have to be pretty crazy to think that that is true. I've seen the movie, and it's nasty (not so much because of the story line, as I take it as fiction) but because it's so gory. Ew, ew, ew. There is an urban myth about being knocked out at night clubs and waking up the next day in a tub full of ice and without kidneys, but once again: It's a myth, and it obviously doesn't seem to be a Brazil-only thing, as Flaco pointed out.

If I were a tourist, I'd be much more wary of pickpockets and being run over (seriously, some people here seem to think that red lights and pedestrian crosswalks are just decoration) than of having my organs harvested. If something like this were true, I´m pretty sure something would have been on the news somewhere and it would have been a pretty big scandal. Or y'all thing that a movie is going to be the one to break such an amazing story? You have gotta be kidding me if you all are *that* gullible and *that* influenced by movies.

I've seen plenty of movies where the USA is invaded by aliens and I still go there without worrying that a mothership is going to try to suck me off the earth.

It was a GREAT horror movie. Better than Hostel could ever dream of being! Well, the Brazillians should be so whiny about it... are people scared of going to Texas after seeing Texas Chainsaw Massacre??

Actually, Brazil is known for its illegal organ trade. You can find information all over the internet about where to go and average prices you can expect depending on age and such. As far as stealing the organs, maybe it doesnt happen happen often, but im sure it happens. It happens all over latin america.

Many doctors there play reverse Robin Hood. Rob from the poor and give to the rich.

Stealing organs from unknown people is crazy and sick. If it is for rich then they are taking chances. An organ has to be a match for you, why take an organ from an unknown who might be sick, on something or just unhealthy. Doing it the right way a doctor would know this up front after proper tests are run. Even if an organ is a match the recipient would be taking anti rejection drugs for life because who cannot fool your own body, it knows what belongs to it.
