Default Mail

Hey guys,

I need some advice. I want to mail my girlfriend in Rio a laptop for her birthday. She wants to pay for part of it some I am only on the hook for 200 bucks. The computer was 650. Does anyone know the best way to get it there. I read online the import fees are 60%!

I can take a risk and mail it in a different box and declare it as clothes and wrap it in clothes. I just do not want her to have to pay 400 dollars in import taxes. I know I can fly there any just hand it to her if I take it out of the box. But I do not go back until November my August trip got cancelled.

Any suggestions?

MK

There is always the possibility of someone else delivering it to her in person.

This can be a private party OR a person that makes regular trips there. Also, from time to time, a courier can provide the service at a reasonable cost (less than the 60% tariff).

"There is always the possibility of someone else delivering it to her in person."

Jib hit the nail on the head! One time I delivered a 19" TV for a friend's family in Bogota. I delivered an ATM card for a friend's GF. He delivered some much needed cash for an amiga SOTB. Just find a friend you trust to deliver the goods. He can even buy the laptop, if you don't have it already, and save you shipping it to him/her in the US for transport. Just use your imagination. If I have anything going to LAm, I have a friend deliver it.

Damn, once I delivered 2 #'s of PanamaRed...oops, was that between countries or states

The above is a joke (unless you were the one driving the car)

...or deliver it yourself. I'm sure you can use a vacation.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. I am going to take it. I am going to Rio in November. I am spending a night and day in Rio, then Sam and I head out for 3 days in Petropolis, the 3 days in Buzios. I want to get a day of diving in there if I can. It should be fun. My Recife trip got cancelled because my friend that worked on the Knorr got laid off. The govenment cut funding for the National Science Foundation. All our money for science is being diverted for Iraq. He was the low man on the totem pole. That sucks because I was looking forward to touring the Knorr.

I will have a really cool time for my aniversario de 36 anyway!

Thanks guys,

MK
