Question Moving to Brazil....

Hi all,

I'm getting tired of bad weather, economic gloom and stupid laws of The Republic of Ireland. Thinking of selling up and buying a Chacara in the sun. Of course there's the problems of visa, language and work.

I'm not looking for mad nightlife, I'm not looking to be rich beyond my wildest dreams. i'm looking for some land, some privacy, a broadband connection and somewhere around 10miles that i can buy dinner.

So the problems would be Visa... Is it really as hard to get one as they say? I've read that if you know someone that knows someone this can be easier. I dont have $25,000 to invest and reading up on that they do a review of the biz after 3 or 5 years.

Work. I could easily do the celta or TEFL course here before going but can you live on a teachers wage? Remember i wouldnt be paying rent or Mortgage.

Finally, where to live. I havn't been to brazil yet, I know crazy aint it, The plan is to go in new year ( twice i've had to cancel trips to SP for family reasons in last 9months). I've heard that Itatiba is quiet and has a few good english schools and also there is a nice town near it called Morungaba. Has anybody every heard of this place?

New here and hoping to soak up as much info as i can. Dated a gal from SP for a year and thats how i got a flavour of the brazilian life.

I can only advise you to go there for a month or two before you decide to move.
If I am not mistaken EU members don't need visa to enter.
Brazil is a very beautiful place but you will need to learn many things about life over there. From your personal safety to corruption and level of bureaucracy that does not exist in Europe.
Changing form Ireland to Brazil will bring you a culture shock that is not so easy to overcome. To be able to work officially you need a work permit. My personal experience that Brazilian immigration is worst than the US one, and regular works like teachers make ridiculously low wages.

Welcome to the board you two. I would suggest you tell us some **** about yourselves before LL gets upset.

Watch Tourista before you go to Brazil.

Liger,

Having lived in Costa Rica and now the Philippines, the advise to visit first is essential. Moving to a foreign country entails learning how to do almost everything you take for granted again like when you were in your first apartment. There are things about the Philippines which drive me wacky but the good outweighs the bad for me.

I've lived here 8 months but would never invest a dime here unless it was "mad money" which I could afford to lose completely. You are not a citizen and you don't have the same rights as citizens do. I think you might love Brazil but I'd get to know it before I moved or invested much money.

As far as earning money in the third world, this is seldom done easily by a foreigner. I taught English in CR and earned $700 a month, which was enough to live on but not many extras. Also how well you speak Portuguese will greatly affect your enjoyment. Sound like a great idea but move cautiously.

I already posted a short introduction.

Turistas is a little exaggerated but clearly points out the fact that the place where you see paradise can turn into hell faster than you would believe.

Paul, have you ever been to Latin America? The entire culture seems to be based on waiting. If you are this impatient about getting access to the entire board, you may well have quite a bit of problem with the way things work down here. (or DON'T work, as is as often the case). Squeeze it easy and it will all happen. In time.
