Default Taking it to the Streets!

Two days ago, we went to the immigration office in Panama City. The traffic was especially bad adding about an hour to our trip each way. There were two groups protesting. One was the college students protesting against the usual things students protest against. The second was more interesting.

Almost the entire construction labor force was protesting against Colombian Developers and Contractors. It would appear that the Colombians were being accused of everything from not paying social security to making individuals work over time, without pay, and hazardous working conditions. Mostly they were accused of not respecting their employees. In other words, conducting business as they normally do in Colombia. Definitely an embarrassment for my visiting future Colombian in-laws.

This is not the first time that Colombians have been singled out. The immigration law has been changed to allow a 30 day visa, with a possible 60 day extension, the intent being to cut down on those individuals over staying their legitimate time in country. The biggest violators are Colombians made up largely of Colombian working girls. No one really expects things to change much but it is another sign that the relationship between Colombia and Panama has become a bit strained.
