Have any of you heard of this? This is some of the most incredible music I have ever heard.

Here is a little quote I found about it,

"Aging Cuban musicians whose talents had been virtually forgotten following Castro's takeover of Cuba, are brought out of retirement by Ry Cooder, who travelled to Havana in order to bring the musicians together, resulting in triumphant performances of extraordinary music, and resurrecting the musicians' careers."

If you ever want to get a taste of some of the best musicians in the world pick up the CD! THese guys are over the top!

I picked it this CD a couple of months ago, knowing almost zero about cuba! Thanks to Cubafro I have been enlightened! I just watched a documentay about them! It was incredible to watch these men create this group, and music, in the late 1990's. There ages are 70 - 100 years old!

Check it out if you can!

They achieved notoriety after a popular film was released about them in 1999 revolving around the recording of the cd, called "Buena Vista Social Club," duh.

Here's what netflix has to say... "American guitarist Ry Cooder brings together a group of legendary Cuban folk musicians (some in their 90s) to record a Grammy-winning CD in their native Havana. The result is spectacular as subsequent concert footage of gigs in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and New York City's Carnegie Hall proves. Director Wim Wenders captures not only the music, but also the life stories of these fascinating artists."

And IMDB... "A group of legendary Cuban musicians, some as old as their nineties, were brought together by Ry Cooder to record a CD. In this film, we see and hear some of the songs being recorded in Havana. There is also footage from concerts in Amsterdam and New York City's Carnegie Hall. In addition, many of the individual musicians talk about their lives in Cuba and about how they got started in music."

Thumbs up Re: Buena Vista Social Club

That`s cool to see you guys interested in my country and our music...for those who doesn`t know the cuban musicians I`ll suggest you if interested to listen this DIVA CELIA CRUZ; she passed away in 2006 but did a wonderfull job in music..
For the most recent and famous artists there`s ORISHAS, they`re cuban, living in FRANCE and they do reggaeton, rap, salsa...it`s just wonderfull...
If for the buena vista, you can understand a bit the lyrics , for me it`s just a travel deep in CUBA ; just feel the beat if you don`t understand everything

My Colombian friends introduced me to the music of Celia Cruz several years ago. She has some great salsas and a unique voice. She was really good. She even did a commercial here in the US. As she says in her song, life is a carnival.

I will look for the Buena Vista Social Club. There is great music from all over the world we never get introduced to in America. I am glad this board and my travels have opened up my eyes and my ears.

Thanks gentlemen.

Celia...La Reina!!! She was, and always will be, a legend in music...for those of you that don't know her, or have never heard her music, make an effort to do so. In the meantime here's a sample along with some great dancing to watch):

Hard to believe this lady was in her late 70's, and still moved the way she did.

...and here's a little Bio to help fill in the gaps:
