Default One Small Step in the Right Direction

I know this could be posted in the LAm News section, but it's non confrontational and really limited to Cuba. I know everybody will say the average Cuban can't afford one, but that's not the point.

All we can hope for is that change does happen for the better and not too fast.

All jokes aside about cells being so annoying and sometimes dangerous if used while driving. This is a freedom very few in Cuba have been able to utilize. I like these small steps and hope to hear of more positive strides in the future.

I might be hard to say, but so far "Go Raul"!

Tonk,

Your comment about cell phones is spot on in my book. While I do not have "boots on the ground" experience, I will definitely make the trip when the US government treats Cuba like every other country.

Communication is all. I remember China and the US "communicating" over a ping pong table. Things have to start some where.

I always thought I would have to wait until I got my Colombian papers to visit Cuba, but it is looking like maybe I can go with my good old blue Passport. (right, my Australian)

Post One Small Step in the Right Direction

And right on the heels of permitting cell phones comes the news that all Cubans will be permitted to stay in all tourist hotels (if, of course, they have the money!) and rent cars! Wow, things are changing fast under Raul!

Incidentally, I think (but I'm not certain) that North Korea may be the only country left that bans cell phones.

Computers go on sale to general public in Cuba for 1st time

AP
Posted: 2008-05-02 11:33:48
HAVANA (AP) - Cubans are getting wired. Computers went on sale to the general public on the communist island on Friday and potential consumers were lining up outside store windows to gawk and consider buying.

President Raul Castro's government had authorized the sale of personal computers to average Cubans more than a month ago, but they were not made available until Friday.

Computer sales are the latest of a series of measures Castro has taken to make life easier for ordinary Cubans.

The new government also has erased bans on cell phones and luxury hotel room rentals, and has made it easier for state workers to own homes they once rented as part of their jobs. It also is letting more private farmers and cooperatives take a crack at putting fallow government land to better use.

Tonk,

Not sure but I think they are trying to also please the government of Brazil. With the economy of Brazil going like gang busters, and having a socialist President, maybe…just maybe…it is time to try something a bit different in Cuba. The country being looked at the most as a model, by other Latin American countries, is Brazil. It is now the ‘socialist’ leader of Latin America, Venezuela and Bolivia are just talk…..and Cuba is not even talking any more.

Revolutions can be …well you know….so revolting!

Thumbs up Re: One Small Step in the Right Direction

HT ,
Just saw your thread and thanks for the interest for mi cubita
Well yes things are changing and quite frankly that was the TIME!!!
tHE CUBAN CELLPHONE COMPANY CUBACELL was the one I have been using even last year and my family to be able to use it had to keep the one under my name ...I hope the transfer like money will be easier too and something funny though..I was using DUALES to send money to the family and when RAUL started all those changes they stopped working with CUBA
The biggest change expected will be the salaries , because it's true it's nice to see those change but it's like showing a well cooked lamb leg to an hungry dog who is attached if you get my drift...without more money all the changes are worthless ...Anyways I still say good job to RAUL, at least he is integrating the notion of hope even though a lot of cuban just don't believe still in that...

NOW I GOT A QUESTION! NOTHING TO DO WITH CUBA..WHERE IS THE GENERAL INFOS THREADS AS I WANTED TO START A THREAD SINCE I CAME BACK AND REALLY GLAD TO BE BACK

CUBA
