I was down there in April 2008. It's one thing for the "average" cuban to own a cell phone but it is another to have the line connected to use it. It costs 120 CUC. I won't even get into how you convert that into dollars and cents because if you are an american you have to buy euros or canadian dollars before you get to Cuba so you lose some money there and then when you get to Cuban you lose some money when you convert it to the CUCs. What I haven't figured out yet is since they have illegal cable tv (yep) they have to have the illegal cell phone hook-up. From what I understand you can't get around that 120 CUC hook-up fee, that doesn't include phone cards of course. More on this when I return (gulp) from my next trip down there.

There are some people there that do have money. A two-class (caste?) is slowly developing down there from what I can see.

Nice post buddy, and yes it is expensive but those that you are saying have the money are fortunate to have family members outside and willing to help them. 120CUC = 120us $...I reported it in my trip report that even at the airport be really carefull as at the cambio office in Jose Marti they will try to screw you by changing your money as if it was Us $
Actually it looks like the illegal cable is easier to hook up than the cell phone..even illegal internet is easier.. the telecommunications are tightely regulated and until now even though RAUL ease-up a bit the politic, we are still in a restrictive and controlled country
