Received this interesting letter the other day... food for thought...
Wow, what a letter, what is really sad about a letter like this ZORRO, is that it is based totally on fear. This is the sad truth about much of our brothers in the south, is that they must make decisions based on fear! Or at least they are led to believe that.
Chavez is losing his popularity in Venezuela faster than he gained it. Or at least in my eyes as I have been watching ven news for sometime now and have a very sexy special in the field commentator.
He is kind of like our Bush. Started off with a lot of popularity but losing it. Unfortuantely he has created a dictatorship and is pretty much still controlling Ven out of fear!!!
The second Chavez is found out ot be helping the FARC or any other paramilitary group in Colombia. Believe me the **** will hit the fan. If our CIA doesn't take him out (could easily be the case no matter how peaceful of a president we get in 08) than there could quite easily be a war between the 2!
Personally, I think Chavez is thinking in long range terms of a Gran Colombia or New Granada which he, of course, would lead. I think the other former members of that Bolivarian unity of Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Colombia, may take a dim view of such a goal. Even those who pretend friendship with Chavez, I think, are a little uneasy about his grab for power.
If he were to ever attempt to achieve such a goal by means other than a plebiscite, I think he'd find a major intervention on the part of the followers of the Monroe Doctrine. More likely, he'll meet an untimely death as did the former presidents of Panama and Ecuador in explosions on board air planes. More than likely Chavez will get caught helping to fund and supply the FARC and ELN, and will end up pissing off most of even those who pretend to support him now. They all have fear revolutionary threats of one kind or another and don't want to see further instability in the area. And, they're kind of touchy about their own national sovereignty. He'll become increasingly isolated and will end up being a much easier assassination target by some unhappy group in Venezuela, maybe a former RCTV employee.
He even publicly expresses sympathy toward them. I guess there just hasn't been a direct trace of his oil dollars going to them, but I would bet my bottom dollar that he has given them money. They have camps in Venezuela. They cross the border into Venezuela and they're safe.
Though I know Chavez isn't popular with people of any means in Venezuela (those who can afford to get out), he still worries me. I have run across quite a few poor people in Colombia who think that Castro's ideology is great. He gives the people education and health care, though it's not worth anything. Chavez is the same... he promises to take care of the poor. But he's just an extreme case of the old idiom, "If it's too good to be true..."
If he were to ever attempt to achieve such a goal by means other than a plebiscite, I think he'd find a major intervention on the part of the followers of the Monroe Doctrine.
Chavez talks a good game but his ‘legs’ are too short.
One leg, the anti-U.S one, is always popular however, the downside risk to other countries is greater that Venezuela. For better or worse, the other countries in the ‘Gran Colombia possibility’ need the U.S. but not in the way the U.S. government believes. They need us to keep the playing field level between the countries in Latin America. There is a considerable mistrust between these countries and it may be time for our government to quit the ‘divide and conquer’ approach but I am not going to hold my breath.
The other leg is Chavez is just not that popular the Latin America. When Chavez started waving good old Simon Bolivar’s sword over his head at a photo opp, the newspapers in LA skewered him. There were even a few comments from political types which were none too complementary. Chavez is not a Simon Bolivar. Even if he were, remember that Gran Colombia started to unravel almost immediately. I would not expect much difference this time.
