Capitalism, as we define it, is a moving target for those who we “choose” to convert to capitalism …ie. third world countries.

As they say, the devil is in the details, but one of my favorites is when another country voices opposition to our subsidizing farmers, we pretend it isn’t so. Free water to California to grow crops in the desert. The free water comes by way of US Government paid for irrigations systems to the various Californian distribution points. Naturally the issue is a non-starter from our standpoint. We want fair and open trade as long as we provide the definition or fair and open.. I am not saying that providing water is necessarily a bad thing, I am saying that it IS a subsidizing the agricultural sector.

LL, is spot on my book. Capitalism has NEVER worked well in Brazil until they got the current socialistic President. More individuals have access to opportunities than ever before in Brazil. While not a paradise,
there is a sense of accomplishment and recognition for the entire country. Before, the old money made sure that little “trickled down” to the masses.

Brazil, as one of the principal members of the B.R.I.C. nations (Brazil, Russia, India & China) are poised to lead the world in the next century. One of those I have EXTREEM doubts about, however, I don’t mind being wrong. Time will tell.

If that happens I hope we fade out to be something like Switzerland, with just a little better climate! And a little better humor!

Interesitngly enough those are the nations exploiting their national resources, all to make a buck .. We will see how they pan out after another 20-30 years!

LL,

Exploiting natural resources is how the US was able to make its biggest gains. Iron ore, oil, copper, coal and then we went into producing agricultural items for export. We were able to get the balance of payments in our favor and then went into the financial services area.

If Colombia can get things together, they would also be in the running as they have much the rest of the world with respect to natural resources.

The Mrs. told me that 41% of the population in Paraguay are below the poverty line. Guess the outcome of the election is not such a surprise after all.

Bolivia has defaulted on its' obligation to deliver oil to Brazil for the second quarter. Guess that why Morales is planning to nationalize the oil company in Bolivia. Lots of luck! I can not think of a nationalized oil operation that has been successful. Venezeula, it is reported, has 2 or 3 people doing the same job in their oil production. Definitely not efficient. Also a greal failing with nationalized oil operations, is the lack of monies for maintence and further exploration.

I definteley believe the natural resources of country is theirs not anyone elses, but if our gov't has ball and maybe if Hilary or Obama get in we will , jajajaja we would do something about china, they make brasil and the pilaging of rainforests, look like a drop in the ocean!

As far as brasil and bolivia go, seams they would be brothers, aren't they not socialists!!!!!

Yes they are both socialists.

The problem with the oil from Bolivia to Brazil was the result of decreasing production. Morales believes that by nationalizing the production, he can provide more oil. Go figure!
