Default Peru's Shining Path Reving Up

The article is long but worth a read. Where Colombia's atrocities are on the decline, Peru's are on the rise. This bears watching.

Love him or hate him, x President Fujimori sure took care of business with these guerrillas! In the poorer parts of Lima, Fugimori's charactures are graffitied all over the place showing his appeal to many. It's a shame that he and his right hand thug Montesinos carried things a bit too far.

When I was in Peru this February, the Fujimora trial was on television everyday (somthing like OJ). I don't think he could actually come up with a good "middle ground". He eliminated the rebels but, is critisized for too many deaths. I am not sure if this is a good comparison but, it might be like somebody critisizing Truman for dropping the bomb.

You can say that President Fujimori did go too far or you can say he didn't go far enough because he didn't get all the rebels. After a lesson like that why is the problem slowly coming back? This time according the article the rebels are pay salaries, and going from town to town recruiting new people. The government also abandoned the militas they armed to help fight the rebels. If the rebels are bold enough to ambush cops in broad daylight and destroy police stations then the government will have a problem bigger than frying Fujimori.
