What does one do for gainful employment when one has been a Jefe with the narco groups or AUC in Colombia? Some enterprising individuals have decided to go into the construction trades.
In three countries that I know of, certain Colombians have gone ligit……well sort of…..maybe……ok in your dreams.
“……. a consortium called Grupo Viveros is building an upscale resort to be marketed to foreigners only. Its chief spokesman is a Colombian hoodlum named Gustavo De La Cruz, who on the front page of the PRD-aligned La Prensa threatened that if SUNTRACS is not removed people will be killed.” – Panama News
Suntracs was an 'independent' (what ever that means down here) trade union. The above firm decided that it would provide a union for their employees and not have to deal with all those bothersome negociations concerning workers rights.
An “insider joke” is that Colombians practice dispute resolution by assignation. Have to admit….a most effective technique!
You'd be surprised at how many big Narcos have big homes in Brazil, in the coastal areas.
Narco Guys love Brazilian women!
There's a lot of strories about Pablo Escobar and Brazil and the 'shipping' as he used to say, them back to one of his many Mansions in Colombia. I the tradition continues, one example is Bueller's recent thread about the one dude who got busted.
Mr. G. certainly has it right as I understand things. It is absolutely amazing how much money (Narco dollars) were spent on “developing’ Miami and other cities through out the world. The money HAS to go somewhere I suppose and tangible assets appear as good a place as any.
One of the great exports from Colombia as been the “organizational skills” of the so called “fringe players”. These individuals may or may not have made their money directly from the Narco trade but they certainly honed their abilities in that environment.
Let us say that for some reason or other these individuals have decided to become legitimate and have decided to have “interests” outside of Colombia. Lest you think that they always come in with Narco dollars and ‘buy the market’ this is not necessarily the case. A politico in one of the countries is approached with an offer he can’t refuse. Turn over your countries pension plan to us and we will give you 10 to 15 percent finders fee. Then they will go into ‘business’ together. This is similar to a ‘no money down” business transaction in the U.S.
Almost any of the wealthy families in Colombia, and else where in Latin America for that matter, know how to ‘handle’ labor negotiations and land acquisitions. Please remember, in Colombia, these are the same families who funded, and still are funding, the A.U.C.
This is really not that much different and a number of our wealthy families in the U.S. became established in a similar manner. As much as I would like to believe otherwise, these type of activities are the same though out the world. The main difference as I see it, is a generation or two, and no one questions HOW the family money was obtained in the first place.
BOGOTA, Colombia -- Soldiers swarmed onto a farm Monday and captured one of the world's most wanted drug traffickers hiding in bushes in his underwear. Diego Montoya, who sits with Osama bin Laden on the FBI's 10 most-wanted list and has a $5 million bounty on his head, allegedly leads the Norte del Valle cartel.
Talk about humiliation, if every I got caught in my underwear, I would hope that it would be in some disgusting sexual activity. Am I the only one who thinks like this?
