Sometimes the forces of Evil can only be dealt with by force.
Diplomacy can only be taken so far.
Anyone remember WWII ? or maybe that wasn't a war worth fighting??
Being a butting licking appeaser earns NO respect in this world.
Stay tuned.... IRAN will be getting there's VERY SOON.
Who said anything about a war?
A brief 7 days bombing campaign that takes out
all their nuclear and miltary capabilty sounds fine to me.
Sort of like the shock and awe in Desert Storm, but minus the
invasion part. I for one don't want to see us inside Iran.
On the question of why "wars" on everything (i.e. War on Drugs, War on Poverty, War on Terrorism, etc.)...well in a land where the U.S. Supreme Court recently affirmed an individual's 2nd Amendment right to bear arms and where our Cowboy history and mentality suggest an all-out fight to victory is the "American way" to do things right, our policymakers probably can't help but to label them all "wars". Perhaps it's also to better "sell" the concept politically to Joe six-pack, if you call them "wars".
I've always advocated a "smart war on terror", because in my opinion just "killing off all the terrorists" (even if we could do ourselves which we cannot) won't advance the real cause, if you don't at the same time dry up the well from which terrorism feeds. In other words, killing off Osama and making him a martyr may only wind up breeding a new generation of Osamas, if we don't also do the following at the same time: make a winning case why American values and ideas should triumph for everyone, and helping those less fortunate in the third world to "help themselves" out of mass misery.
In short, we need to win the battle of ideas, and win hearts and minds. The smart war on terror forges the battle on many levels, not just brute force of our military, but also makes use of other sources of U.S. power such as diplomacy, financial power, sanctions, and moral example and simply the power of our ideas.
Obama, if nothing else, is a smart guy - take my word for it (he was the first African-American President of Harvard Law Review and Professor of Constitutional Law at Univ. of Chicago in the 90s - my lawyer friend here in Philly was a former student of Obama).
Obama gets it, I think. You need more than just a big stick to win the war on terror in the end.
And we define the goal as not just winning a "war", but ultimately helping to build the peace and prosperity for everyone.
I enjoyed reading the reaction of the world leaders over the recent elections.
There are countries where you need to have respect to have an impact. For example, the US has asked Colombia to help in the fight against drugs which it seems like they have done a great job. Many Colombians have died by being faithful to this cause, and now we are backing away from helping them. This speaks volumes to other countries.
Also, why promote China and not Colombia? Each year in China, thousand of people disappear because of their personal beliefs. I do not hear about the Colombian government capturing Colombians and killing them or putting them in jail because of their personal beliefs.
Why would other countries want to trust the US when we are not faithful in keeping our word? This has more to do with politicians than the US president. In general the president just signs thing, but our politicians create policies and act on policies. The US politicians are not looking out for our best interest or other countries best interests.

I can't figure oiut why we support china over colombia, i think we are a little scared of CHINA and they are cheap cheap cheap, in most of the mercahndise and defintely in their quality. MAKES NO SENSE
I think now that the world know we all don't have a finger on the trigger all time, that maybe we can be lead by example and not by fear!
I also agree that there are some countries that need to know that we are not afraid of pulling the trigger, I think they too my open up more if they know that, but DON'T have a gun pointed at their heads 24/7 like we usually have!
